Savings on European Delivery
I have never considered using the European Delivery option, however it seems like more people are going that route.
Is there a significant savings by doing this or is the motivation the whole experience of picking up your car in Germany that makes people choose this delivery method. Please let me know as I am thinking of making a change from my 2001 540 to a 2011 550. Does it matter the dealer you use for ED. My E39 only has 81,000 miles but the new 550 looks really nice. |

Check out the ED forum, as well as the ED Wiki. There is tons of information there that is well summarized.

I would strongly suggest you hop over to the European Delivery subforum here.... it explains in detail the answers to nearly all of your questions. Be sure to read the Wiki at the top of the page.
And yes, I'm a HUGE fan of European Delivery (#4 scheduled for July 7th, 2010!).

BMW Canada's ED program is completely different from the one offered in the US. From the BMW CA web site:

CDN VS U.S. Pricing
The goal is to save money, right now the CDN dollar vs the U.S. dollar is almost even, yet the MSRP for a 2011 550 in CDN is around $ 73,000.00 the MSRP for the 2011 550 in the U.S. is around $ 60,000.00.
BMW does not honor the warranty in Canada on cars that have been imported from the U.S., however you can take it back acroos the border for warranty service even though the vehicle has been registered in Canada. We live 40 minutes from the U.S. border so no big deal if a major repair was required. BMW will not sell a new car to a Canadian for export but will sell a "used" BMW, always a way around that as I have friends that live in the U.S that could order the car from a dealer. Which brings me to the European Delivery for U.S. residents, this is probably even a better price deal then getting one ordered from a dealer from the lot. I read the following from the ED forum:"You must be a legal resident of the USA and have a valid passport to place an order. Once you have negotiated pricing and decided on your travel dates, you will sign a Purchase Order form. The PO is a contract with BMWNA in which you will agree, among other things, to export the car to the USA and register the car only in the USA." The question is... Does this apply to the original owner only? Would be no problem to get a legal U.S. resident to buy the car and deliver into the U.S. and then sell it to me as a used car which I assume would be OK to export to Canada. Any thoughts would be helpful as I will be in Europe along with a U.S. resident next May so the extra cost to get over to Munich for an ED would be small.... get the car and send it over to the U.S. right away. Thanks. |

Volcanoes aside, the issues I have with picking up ED this summer for a new 5 are:
1. build quality - just concerned about typical quality issues that are normally fixed over the course of first 12-24 months of production (I own an 08 535 and had all kind of issues with the N54). I'd thus prefer to wait a bit.... 2. Mark up is higher because it is a new car - I was quoted double the amount I paid for my current 535 (which as an ED). |

Advice I got on ED was don't do it to save $, do it with intention to have a nice vacation with a great car you normally couldn't rent so easy.

Thanks, but I would like to do both. Do you know if you need to pay D&H charges for ED?
