Need some help
Ok, I have a 2000 528I, 5 speed manual, roughly 200K +. I'm neither the owner or the driver of this car, but merely the poor shlub that gets to wrench on it. Here's where I need some help, my daughter was driving the car on the highway when she tells me it suddenly went from roughly 1700 rpm, up to around 3500 or there about. she got off the gas, got on the clutch and when the engine went back to normal rpm, she released the clutch and attempted to drive. She then says she heard a loud bang and the driveline was no longer engaged.
When I got there, I saw that the engine was running just fine. You could put the transmission in every gear, clutch still felt "normal", but the car will not move under its own power, and there was a faint smell of burnt clutch. There is no unusual noise, no grinding, no metal on metal sounds, just the regular engine noise. I checked the drive shaft and it is in tact, it wont turn while the car is stationary so the rear end isn't the issue.
Has anyone here had anything remotely like this? I have never had a clutch go out on anything I have driven, nor a transmission, but I would expect some sound coming from that area if it were one of them. Before I tear into this thing, I was wondering what some of you think the issue might be.
Any and all help will be MOST appreciated, I have never dove into a BMW and have learned over my years that its better to ask those who know more than I do about certain things what they think and maybe avoid a huge mistake because I was just guessing.
