Important AutoTransmisson E36- Special Fluid Dealership or specialist-

BMW 3-Series E36 Compact (1994 - 2001)

It will have a label on the bottom transmission.

Orange label = Dexron III ATF
Green label = special oil from BMW
Yellow label = needs no change (lifetime fill)
No label = SAE80W GL-4

The diff oil is SAE90W GL-5 gear oil.

Do not input Dexron III in Lifetime oil....Green and Yellow is Lifetime oil.

Hope this helps..

I have a green label that specifies Dex. III.

BTW, BMW has quietly backed out of saying that anything has a 'lifetime' fluid or oil.

Mein Auto: E36 328i Convertible Auto
Hello, I have the same question you posed here about the right transmition oil. I have an 1998 E36 328i convertible Auto, I have shipped it to a warmer country and its done about 80K miles, and suppose i need to change the gearbox oil. The oily issue is that i believe the sticker that identifies the oil may have worn off over the years in mine, so i don't know what the right oil. Someone driving a 528i reckons i can use Dextron III? what your take?

thanks

Mine says lifetime on it, I called mt buddy at BMW DexIII will work in place of lifetime just gotta get as much of the old fluid out. I think he said it was the same stuff pretty much. If you don't want to take a chance drain the old fluid into a clean bowl of some sort change the filter and gasket reinstall pan and fill up. If what you drained is not enough get some more fluid from BMW and top it off.

oh really, thanks, but ud imagine BMW should be able to provide this information outright when presented with a chassis number instead of us relying on some sticker that may or may not wear out with time.
Thanks for the reply, looks i'll go for dextron III then
