BMW EVP vs 3rd party warranty

My wife and I just purchased an '07 X5 with 9k miles on it. We are pretty sure we want to get an extended warranty as the factory warranty and maintenance are up in October of 2011.

The dealers in the area don't seem interested in selling the BMW EVP plan (BMW's extended warranty) for whatever reason but I was wondering if anyone on here has purchased it or has an opinion about the BMW warranty vs a third party.

We purchased a third party warranty but have 30 days to cancel for full refund.

I would NEVER buy an aftermarket warranty- the reason dealers want to sell 3rd party warranties is they make MUCH more money with them. Profit on the BMW plans are less. The reason they are less is BMW stands behind them and the warranty will be there in 4 years when you need it.

Contact a dealer, or search in the "Ask a Dealer" forum... there are several sponsors that will give you a price....and there is more info over there.

PS Skip the extended maintenance plan...

To the OP,
I might have waited until you were closer to the current warranty expiration time, to snap up an ext. warranty; yes, ext warranties appear to rise in price slightly over time,
but you are paying now for unnecessary/unusable "coverage" for a 15 months +.

My first pick would be the BMW offering. My second choice would be a 3rd party ext warranty from WD, et al. My last choice would be one that the local dlr is humping...

And I would DEFINITELY return the one you bought....read the policy and do precisely what they require to cancel- in writing, etc, etc. Don't just call the dealer....

I also own a porsche and the delearship was selling a 3rd party "tire" warranty and the company went under a year or so ago and pissed off many people. I would stay away from 3rd party warranties unless it's from a reputable dealership like Autonation or Carmax

Did the P dealer stand behind their sales? Doubtful. Many people believe "if the dealer is selling it, it must be good- they won't risk their reputation"... to which I say "Money trumps reputation".
