Buying a '97 740iL

Hello group:

I am in the market for a 740 and seriously considering a '97 and a '98 740iL. The 97 has 165,000 miles with the '98 at 124,000.

Any input regarding these year models would be great.

I also found a 2001 for a good price in excellent shape but a little outside my comfort budget.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ed

740 wanna be owner

OK, now I heard that I should stay away from '97 740's that '99 - 01 are the best.

What do you think?

Regards,

Ed

Well, the '99-01' models will have more available options, and I believe the 2001 had all available options come standard, such as variable valve timing, electronic adjustable suspension, navigation, and more, but I'm not one of the people who would call them better cars. My 97, made in 96, has none of the available options for that year and it still has more than double the amount of features I see in alot of cars coming out next year. You need to decide what options you want, and then look for a car that has them, but beware, more features means more things that can break on cars that are a decade old.

checking out a pampered '99 740i

Hello all:

Thank you for your insightful comments, I appreciate all the support.

Last night saw a '99 740i that has been extremely well cared for cosmetically (flawless metallic gray exterior/black interior) as well as mechanically it seems. My mechanic will have it this afternoon for inspection.

I may actually get this one.

Good luck with your search. Overall you should not be dissapointed with the purchase of a 740i.. Regardless what year you buy maintenance and general care are paramount to the experience you will have with the car.. Remember that regardless of what year or mileage e38 you purchase, the car is at best 9 years old... There will be love that will need to be given back to the car..

There are positives to both the post and pre face lift models. Yes the post face lift came with more options and the M62 TU engine. But with the Technical upgrade it added a lot more torque witch put added stress on the Tranny. The 1998 is the most reliable year of E38 but the 2001 is by far the most desirable.

Ok group:

Thank you for the great input. We bought the '99 740i.

The previous owner has really pampered this car. It shows great and has done angeleyes and LED tail lights.

Mechanically we found a couple of things. Firstm the upper timing chain cover gaskets need changing to stop the leaks. A couple of hoses needing replacement. then the "valley" gasket needs to be replaced, mostly labor cost. There are other minor things but in general the maintenence was done right. My mechanic is Kip at KB Motorsports in San Marcos, CA.

Will be posting pics as soon as we have the car back.

By the way, we also own a 500SL. Guess we are on our way to a German car stable which makes my Swiss wife happy as her mom is German.

Regards,

Ed

Congrats to you! I had an 03 745Li & now a 98il. I thought it would be hard to get used to but, I can honestly say I like the 98 better in many ways. My car was extremly well maintained and came with a folder full of service reciepts. Good maintenance is imperitive.

Thank you all for the kind input.

The previous owner gave me all the maintenence records so we are lucky.

We are doing a couple of things to make sure we start clean but the car is amazingly well taken care of.

Will bring it home next week and will post photos.
