I bought this vacuum based on a WSJ review. I cannot believe the filth that this thing is picking up. Our carpets are washed twice yearly and vacuumed weekly. Obviously, our Electrolux was not up to the job. This thing is a beast. Clunky to manuever, you'll get a good workout and the attachments are marginal. But, for carpet and floor vacuuming,

I have the same one that I purchased on Amazon.

It is fantastic on carpets and rugs. Not so great on solid floors like tile or wood.
HEPA filters are expensive to replace but can be washed and reused.
It is heavy and a bit cluncky to manuver if you are in a tight space.

Even with its faults I still recommend it and was pleased to see that it did so well against the Dyson.

I agree...

But on my tile and wood floors no matter what setting I use it kicks a lot of bebris out the back rather than sucking it up. That is my biggest dissapointment with this machine. I end up using the wand far too much on the wood/tile floors to get what it won't pick up.

On carpets it's excellent. It could be better on edges and corners though.

I spent the summer of 1988 selling Kirby's so i could put myself through the first year of college. Kirby's are without a doubt #1. Some will tell you they are expensive but they will last a good 20 years or more so in the end, they really are not so expensive.

My wife does before I do the weekly mopping. Picks up unseen stuff, dog hair (very short), dust, etc, makes for a more thorough mopping. Don't use the beater brush though, just suction at low height setting. Maybe LMTDSLP has the beater brush on and that's why stuff gets tossed around.

That makes sense, but it seems like the weight of the wheels could leave dents or track marks from rolling them around on real hardwood floors...

I have an Oreck, which is very light, but I've never considered vacuuming my floors - I just swiffer them.

You must not own a dog that sheds very much. We've got a Westie who sheds, and even 7 months after losing our big hound dog, we still find his hair on the floor (it must be in the air and in the HVAC system, occasionally settling to the floor). It sits in the cracks of the hardwood floor, and I have to vacuum before I swiffer or else I'm just pushing dog hair around.

The vacuum weighs 22 lbs. It leaves no marks on the floors. I, on the other hand, weigh 180 lbs. I sit in chairs on the floor, walk in shoes, etc. No marks. I don't know what the pressure is psi at the point of contact of a woman's high heel, but it's very high. No dents. That's the reason hardwood is used for these floors. But, I can see why someone might think that wheeling something around could cause marks, and scuffing and scratching are problems over time. I usse an Oreck orbital floor buffer to handle those problems, but am about 2 years behind on that. My wife only vacuums the floors once per week before I wet mop. Otherwise, she uses a dry mop daily, you know, the flat swivelly thing with the fringes around the perimeter. It's the thing hanging on the wall in the garage.
