01 740iL - Sport package question

hi,
i'm looking at a 01 740IL with sport pkg and had a question.

what is included in a 01 740IL sport pkg? i used to own 02 525i sport pkg and it does have sport wheels, sport steering wheel, steptronic transmission, and sport suspension.

but this 01 740IL with sport pkg does not have 'sport steering wheels' nor 'steptronic transmission'. it just has, i guess, the sport wheels, and maybe the sport suspension.

so i'm wondering what came with the sport pkg for that model year...

i was looking thru autotraders but none of them seem to have the sport steering wheels.

please help.. thanks.

No lower gearing on the iL Sport, only the i Sport.

Model year differences

thank you for the input. but the 'model year differences' does not go over what is included in 01 740il sport package. if it is just the wheels... it really isn't a sport pkg and won't drive really any different from regular series.

plz help.

If you want a true sport, you should look at a non iL. The 740i sport is the real gem.

That link does has some basic information as the models changed, and 2001 follows these highlights from 1999 and 2000.

1999
Mild face-lift with scalloped headlights, crystallized tail lamps, door scoop illumination, and chrome strip on the trunk. The 4.4 liter engine receives VANOS variable valve timing and torque rises from 310 to 324. Updated side skirts without the round hole plugs for the jack. Sport package consisting of 18-inch rims, blackout trim, lower gear ratio, and vavona redwood interior trim became available on the 740i. Note, 1999 model year had a shorter production period, from 9/98 to 2/99.

2000
Build dates: 3/99 to 2/00.
Features as standard that were options before. Xenon lights, rain sensing wipers, headlight washer nozzles, Navigation, DSP stereo with cassette in the dash and 6 disk changer in the trunk. Sport package became available on 740iL/750iL models, sans the lower gearing.

Sport Packages in the US (info from Q)

Only the 750iL sport pkg could be configured multiple ways since the 750iL came with just about EVERY option available before the sport pkg get's added:
* S-EDC & SLS were standard features, so there were no changes to the 750iL's suspension.
* the "active" comfort seats were standard equip so you could opt (no cost) for the sport comfort seats (the sport seats weren't available w/booty massagers).
* the heated steering wheel was standard equipment...if you got the sport pkg...you could give up the 4 spoke heated steering wheel for the 3 spoke M wheel (no cost option)...but you'd loose the heating feature since the 3 spoke steering wheel didn't come with heating option.
* M Parallel wheels (staggered)
* Shadowline exterior trim
* Nussbaum w/inlay interior trim (no cost option)

The 740iL sport pkg only included 4 options:
* M Parallel wheels (staggered)
* EDC
* Shadowline exterior trim
* Vavona Redwood interior trim

The 740i sport pkg ws the most inclusive pkg:
* sport tuned lowered suspension
* high stall speed torque converter
* 3:15 differential
* M Parallel wheels (staggered)
* Shadowline exterior trim
* Vavona Redwood int trim
* Sport Comfort Seats
* 3-spoke M steering wheel (late introduction)

The "door scoop illumination" mentioned above, is that interior or exterior door scoop?

For a 1998 740il with the following features, could they be ordered separately or does this mean M package. I can't find an original window sticker, just the as built online info.
M parallel wheels
EDC
Vavona Trim
Sport Seats
Shadowline Trim

Thanks

Kevin

In the USA...NONE of the things listed (except EDC) was available in the 1998 model year for a 74oiL.

If you've used one of the online VIN decoders...are any of the options you're asking about listed? In the USA, vavona trim, MPars, 18-way sport seats, & shadowline trim weren't ever offered until the 1999 model year...and that was basically first offered on the 1999 740i sport pkg.

So if your 1998 740iL has any of these options (other than EDC)...then they were added by a previous owner. Prior to the 1999 sport pkg...the 740iL was offered with an "adaptive ride pkg" which offered EDC & rear self leveling on the 740iL. If you really have EDC, I'd also check to see if you have rear self leveling.

If you aren't in the USA...then perhaps you car was ordered with these options ala-cart which could be done in Europe and some other BMW markets. But again, not in the USA.

PDF Specifications

Thanks,

I have attached the vehicle data sheet and a few pictures. To clarify it has comfort seats not sport and to me it has the vavona trim. If it did not, what would be the standard trim?
It appears the M Parallel wheels were added? Spare wheel is not M Parallel. It is the cross spoke 29. The headlights have been replaced. Can you identify from picture the changes?

There is a capped cable in the centre console? What is this and can I connect to it?

The biggest change in the interior is the upgrade to the wide screen nav. The interior wood trim (based on the image's exposure) appears to be the regular Nussbaum wood trim used in all non sport e38 740i/iLs imported to the USA.

Post a pic of this capped cable you speak of...I have no clue what it could be...pics are worth a thousand words.

The exterior has the regular chromeline trim (not the sport pkg's shadowline trim), the facelift's chrome trunk strip ws added, the rear tailights have been changed to look like the 01 rear tails...and a fake M badge has been applied. And as you mentioned...the front headlights have been changed to some type of aftermarket assemblies.

From the build sheet info, you only have EDC...and no rear self leveling...so no adaptive ride pkg.

Question Console Cable

Great to be educated on my car!

Console Pictures attached. Just curious what it is and if it is of use. (Cell Phone Antenna?)

Also what can be learned from the OBD Connection?

My dash pixels were about 50% for display and for one brief drive they improved to 90%? How would that happen?

Thanks Kevin

It's been so long ago (2003) since I've dug around below the phone to remove it and replace it with the tray...but its probably one of the coax cables that was used to connect the phone to something in the back. Not sure if was antenna related...or just a connection to the old analog phone unit in the trunk area.
