I really think this may only matters at the high end of towing capacityand with excessive tongue weight perhap with towing a race car , horses or AirBus/Travel Trailer.
My x5 diesel has standard no frills rear with no excessively expensive goodies that will need to be ordered and replaced in 5 or 6 years. ....(Unlike my old VW Touareg with Multilpe Electric Differential Locks and Air Suspension which all needed to get serviced at my expense for corrosion). If you are not leasing, I will remind you that expensive goodies are expensive to repair and VW banged me for over 2K to repair that nonsense....hense the BMW. If you tow frequently with far distances think diesel. BMW's is Phenominal for a 6 Cyl. Towing a snowmobile trailer with a tongue weight of 175 lbs (or a boat with 135lb.) I do not notice any sag or change in handling characteristics. Honestly, I do not even know I am towing with out using the mirrors and seeing the trailer. If your trailer does not have brakes , Braking is what will be most noticeable in the X5 (as well as all the others) |

Bumper cut
On my 2012, using Drawtite/Reese hitch ... the cut was ~2.25" x ~8.25", only visible from BENEATH the vehicle.
Unless your eyes are BELOW the height of the bumper or on your back on your creeper looking up, you will not be able to see the cut, even if you remove the hitch later. |

I'm new to the tow hitch and trailer thing so pardon me with these simple questions. I read through many posts on aftermarket tow hitches and decided to go with a Curt hitch and 119191 ModuLite HD Protector. The only thing is that the modulite is a 4pin connector and the car trailer I was looking to buy needs a 7-pin connector (electronic brakes). So I would need a Hopkins Wiring - 37185 4-7pin adapter and a separate brake controller?? Or does my car have a brake controller wire I can tap into? Thank you.

You can get the wiring kit AND a brake controller from BMW to go with your aftermarket hitch.
