Autobild Review - BMW 550i Trumps MB E500, Audi S6, and Jaguar XF
The most interesting thing about this test is the 550's performance. 16,7 seconds to 200 km/h is M3 territory. And only 3 seconds slower than a E60 M5...
1st place - BMW 550i * V8, biturbo * 407 hp, 600 Nm * 8-speed-aut. * Weight: 2013 kg * Vmax.: 250 km/h (limited) * 0-100 km/h in 5,0 s * 0-200 km/h in 16,7 s * Braking 100-0 km/h (warm): 38,1 m (ouch!) * Price: €70.500,- 2nd place - Mercedes-Benz E500 * V8 * 388 hp, 530 Nm * 7-speed-aut. * Weight: 1828 kg * Vmax.: 250 km/h (limited) * 0-100 km/h in 5,2 s * 0-200 km/h in 18,7 s * Braking 100-0 km/h (warm): 35,7 * Price: €68.068,- 3rd place - Audi S6 * V10 * 435 hp, 540 Nm * 6-speed-aut. * Weight: 1990 kg * Vmax.: 250 km/h (limited) * 0-100 km/h in 6,0 s * 0-200 km/h in 20,2 s * Braking 100-0 km/h (warm): 35,5 * Price: €85.000,- 4th place - Jaguar XF * V8 * 385 hp, 515 Nm * 6-speed-aut. * Weight: 1894 kg * Vmax.: 250 km/h (limited) * 0-100 km/h in 5,7 s * 0-200 km/h in 19,8 s * Braking 100-0 km/h (warm): 35,2 * Price: €68.800, Can anyone translate the full article or at least the good parts about how BMW rocked the competitors? *Benz, looks odd from the back, those wheel arches have to go, they look silly on this car. The new DI twin turbo that should be out next year is going to be a bruiser, so BMW better be hard at work.
*Audi - The C6 Audi A6 platform is going to be completely redone for next year, everyone knows this, who wants to drive the last year of an old model, not most people dropping 85k Euro on a car. *Jag - Um it's a Jag. Yeah, it's built in England, on a platform developed and still used by Ford and now owned by Tata. Sorry not getting on board with the also rands Saabs/Volvos or anything formerly owned by bankrupt American companies sold to the Chinese or Indians. You wanna try your hand at that mess, be my guest. It looks nice for sure, but I prefer ze Germans. |

Not all that surprised. The Audi isn't handicapped by the F10's numb steering.

If it's your cup of tea, have at it. I must have driven the S6 7-8 times before deciding, actually wanting to like it, thought it was the car I was going to buy. So disappointed in it.

Makes me think that with the $3000 Dinan chip it will beat the E60 M5.

Makes me think what a beast the F10 M5 will be.

Upgrading from S6.
My last vehicle was a 2008 S6. Absolutely loved the car. Ridiculous fun to drive, beautiful to look at, and built like a tank. Almost just ordered a new one. But, after test-driving a 550i, there was no looking back. My 550i is on order. BMW has leap-frogged Audi with the F10. This new car is gorgeous. The technology is light-years ahead of Audi. And, the consistent acceleration of the 550i makes the S6 looks like a jerky, clumsy teenager.
And, with the Dinan upgrade, the 550i should be stupidly hot. |
