Unfortunately they still have fallen short on audio.

Why is it that an entry level vehicle like a Ford Focus can have a better sound system than a vehicle triple its value?

There is a reason 90% of the vehicles mfg in the world dont use 4 inch or 100mm speakers. They cannot reproduce audio fidelity properly.

Seriously, what's with their small speakers? Just going to a simple 6.5" mid would be a world of difference. It's not like they're insanely space constrained or something. Only possible explanation for 4" speakers is that they bought an order for 300 million 4" speakers (typo in accounting), have to use them all up.

Am I missing something, I didn't read any specs on the audio system?

I think they're making that judgment based on the size of the speakers shown in the doors.

Don't mean to sound condescending, but it is obvious they have chosen to stick to the 4 inch speaker if the pictures provided are representative of the new model.

There isn't a 4 inch speaker mfg'd that can reproduce the full audio spectrum even in the super high end category (for example $800 Focal components). However, a 6 inch even in entry level product can come ($80 Boston Acoustic) closer.

They change the whole layout of the center console to accommodate coffee, but too short sighted to realize that audio products dominate the technology scene in just about every vehicle out there. They need to turn in their slide rulers or PDA's as design engineers.

That's pretty much what I expected in terms of BMW NA's product strategy. Yawn. My next car is likely not a BMW anyway.

Depending on the actual base price, Bluetooth, tinted glass, and the alarm could probably be optional extras but I'm not their accountant. And I expect plenty of interior trim choices because that Siena Fineline Wood trim is gross.

What do you plan to get?

I agree with the wood trim, looks like Ikea furniture. Interior design is quite bland.

Don't know. My X3 is going to go next year or the year after, depending on job and financials. There aren't many choices for me, I want a fuel-efficient, eco-friendly vehicle that's got decent cargo capacity so a hatchback is probably the ticket for me. Unless something else shows up in the market, I may just stick with the VW Golf TDI that I like.

If BMW brings over the X1 sDrive20d with an MT or a 123d hatch then I might buy that. Bu there's a better chance of the US gov't eliminating its debt before BMW brings those two over.

Let's just hope they actually put speakers behind the grills. Sometime after the 2008 MY, BMW quit putting speakers behind them in the X5 doors if you just had the base stereo. That was one pleasant side benefit of buying my used one. ;-)

MHO is, if you find the X3 interior too bland or plain then you will probably hate the X1's. The entire 1 series look like econoboxes to me. Especially, when lightly loaded.

Just looked ath Infinit ex 35 for grins and giggles. If that is half the vehicle it is said to be the next X3 better be phenomenal and be at or under 45k.

I just configured one fully loaded for under $43k msrp.

Evl, wait until you drive the EX35! Like the XC60 there is a big difference from the X3 and much nicer interiors IMHO!

Sounds good. Can't wait to read the reviews.

The E90 sedan is the last in the line of great 4 door 3 Series BMW's. Too bad.

On paper it looks phenomenal and it even has a decent sound system. However, I have grown to love the handling of the German. So if it is sloppy like the Q5 I will end up waiting again.

The X3 3.5 looks very very very impressive and I have just opened another slush fund just in case it is what it is supposed to be.

The sound systems I can fix..handling and response is another story, Lol.

steering

Apparentlly the F25 X3's electronic assisted steering has the same lack of feedback and "unnatural feedback" as the F10 5 series. Sad. This is the report by BMW CAR magazine (UK) in the September 2010 issue after driving an Xdrive 35i prototype. They hope it will be addressed before release of the vehicle. They also comment that electonically assisted steering CAN have proper feel and feedback as demonstrated by the MINI. As a side note I heard that Alpina's version of the F10 - its B5 - seems to have properly addressed this issue with a slight change of camber, lighter alloy wheels and non RFT tires.
