Software update

Hi, I decided to have the software on my car updated to the latest revisions by BMW main dealer, my car is a 2005 645ci and the software had not been updated for over two years. Took it to my local dealer who to be fair highlighted all of the risks of updating outside of warranty. But I still decided to go ahead, and the upgrade went through with no issues whatsoever. What difference has it made, well apart from a couple of cosmetic idrive changes nothing is that noticeable, petrol consumption has seen a marginal improvement, but that maybe due to my driving style longer term will tell. My principle reason was to keep my car current as I know many from experience that many software updates are more bug fixes than real performance changes. They can make a real difference to reliability and use-ability but again somewhat unseen. WAs it a cost effective risk I believe so !! I have had many different cars over my lifetime many at the top end of performance and quality from Mercedes, Jaguar, Porche etc and have to say as an all round package this car is by far the best car I have ever owned. What could tempt me from it maybe the odd Aston Martin, never a Ferrari or Porche, but I would have the convertible version of the 6 series, not sure about M6 don't require the severe brute performance....What would tempt others, being practicle not a blue sky wish list !!?

Awesome, thanks for the update, I'm planning on adding a retrofit iPod adapter so I'm thinking of doing the entire update then.

I asked today about it and the tech said that they would only update my system if the car needed it in order to fix a problem. I asked if he could just do it because I wanted him to and he said it would be $220. $110 an hour x2 maybe for labor?

Could anyone tell me what benefits, and or changes I would get from a software update, I have a 2004 645Ci. Any and all information would be appreciated.

software update

Hi, it seems that your cars in the States have some real differences to cars here in Europe. Many of the cars here seem to have more features already programmed into the car. I refer to earlier posts. I have an 645ci 2005 and some of you guys with 650's dont seem to have the features that I have already from a much earlier model, so go figure??
As for the software update, the reason that some of you seem to get a negative response from the dealers is that if they do the software update and any unit fails then that unit (outside of Warranty) has to be replaced at a cost to the owner before they can complete the upgrade. Your car could well be operating correctly but when they load the new software it stalls on a hidden issue that no one is aware of at the time. The latest software level is what they code into the car, they cannot put back earlier revisions, so at any point in time you will always get the latest revisions for the vehicle type.
