316i se starting problems

my bmw will sometimes start first time, a few times in a row and at times it takes a few attempts for it to start. the times it doesnt start the starter motor doesnt even make a noise when trying to turn over. does anyone think that it could be symptoms of a faulty starter motor?

Hi. When I had starting problems similar to yours it was my fuel pump that was faulty, not keeping pressure in the fuel rail. New pump problem solved.
When your starter motor fails to turn over does your lights flash as this is a sign that you have flattened your battery. Jim

thanks for the help so far guys. i had the the starter motor checked out a couple of days ago and it happens to be fine. i have been told that it could either be the ignition switch or the immobiliser. i have bought an ignition switch and will be putting it on today. i hope that it is the ignition switch because it is the cheapest option.
