Timing chain tensioner
Hi there,
I have been experiencing quite significant noises (timing chain slapping) from my M62 E38 740il. The chain has not broken, however I have a feeling it is the timing chain tensioner. I have removed the main timing chain tensioner and upon visual inspection it doesn't look too bad. The spring inside the cartridge has probably slackened off slightly, but can this cause so much noise akin to a 100 year old diesel tractor? I am hoping it is not the chain guides as that requires a lot of work to replace! Any comments appreciated. Thanks |

Further to my post, does anyonrhave any measurements of a new tensioner.
My current tensioner from tip to tip including the 19mm thread section is exactly 100mm. This is measure with the cartridge in position and pressed inside with no tension on it. Does anyone know how long a new one is with no pressure on it? Thanks |

A bad tensioner could probably cause noises, and it may be the problem, but the M62 motors have a known issue about oil pump bolts coming loose. Sinse the timing chain runs on the oil pump, this could be the issue as well, maybe.

Hi JUNEBLOOD,
Thanks for the reply. That looks like a guide and not the tensioner itself. Did you replace the tensioner? |
