M52 starter motor removal, can it be done without removing intake manifold?

Hi,

I'm aware that cn90 has posted a semi-diy, where it states that you can uninstall/reinstall the starter motor on a manual transmission engine from the bottom. However, it seems like a very long way up from the bottom, given the starter is located not far below the intake manifold.

Has anyone here removed the starter on an I6 from the bottom, without removing the intake manifold?

if you remove the drivers side cabin filter housing and duct you may have just enough room to get it in and out. The hard part will be the bolts. Also, you will need "female" torx socket to remove the bolts. Pick up a cheap set at harbor freight tools. http://www.harborfreight.com/6-pc-3-...set-95395.html

PITA, but it can be done. I only lost a half pound of knuckle skin and gained a few tools replacing mine.

The quickest way I find is from below using:
Torx socket, swivel, 3ft extension, ratchet w/ cheater pipe.
Best is w/ torx socket w/ built-in swivel, 3 ft extension, ratchet w/ cheater pipe.

ONce the two main bolts are removed, from below engine, unthread the cable clamp that's bolted to the engine block below the starter. By doing so, this allows the space for the starter to drop down to the ground. Then slide starter out of bell housing, shift and lower it down to the ground.

If you do this right, you should be in and out of this repair in under 30 minutes.

For the record, this question came up again today ...
- New starter in my future! Any DIYs for replacing on the M54 from underneath?
