Dead Speedometer

There's really two parts to this story. One is equipment, the other is European Delivery related. For this forum. my analog speedometer is malfunctioning. Luckily I have HUD. Within 24 hours of picking up my brand new 535i at the Welt, I noticed a difference of about 15mph difference between the HUD (which was higher) and the actual needle on the speedometer.

Additionally, the little cruise control indicator is about 50mph higher than what it's actually set to.

3 days later, even if I'm going 35mph (as indicated on the HUD), the needle is pegged to 0 mph. The odometer still clocks mileage though.

Everything else is great about the car (though it too pulls to the right). But it's a drag being in Europe having just picked up a $70,000 car, and having problems right away.

I've taken it to Paris BMW. They wouldn't even look at it. But that's a story for the ED forum.

Anyone else have speedometer issues?

speedometer issues 2011 535i F10

I just got my 2011 535i yesterday from the dealer. Today, the speedometer started sticking, and eventually pinned to the bottom of the dash. It's stuck there. The HUD still works fine. I'll be taking it into the dealer on Monday and showing them how impressed I am with my car. It's nice, but damn...

In my case, it seems related to setting the active cruise control, which reads waaaay higher than the actual speed (which is also correct in the HUD). The little cruise indicator is up at 140 mph if I'm set around 70. And both move when I adjust the cruise using the steering wheel switch. So it seems mechanical to me.
BMW NA European Delivery said they'd fix it when it arrives at the vpc here, but that's weeks away. Let me know what your dealer says.

Good thing we got the HUD.

Someone had an issue with their 3er on ED and a German dealer fixed it promptly without hassles.

Here's some video of the malfunctioning speedometer, as well as the common "pulling to the right" issue.

speedometer trouble

I just dropped my car off this morning to the dealer here in Baltimore. They told me this is a completely new issue and they're waiting for a reply from BMW. They said they should have news tomorrow morning hopefully--I'll keep you updated as I get information.

Update on speedometer issue

Well, I talked to the dealer today. They sent a message to BMW and BMW replied that they believed this was the first of its kind issue on the 2011 F10. With that said, they are ordering me a replacement instrument cluster and told me it'll be about 2 weeks or so for the part to come in from Germany. Once it gets here they said it'll be a full day to install. Strangely enough my navigation isn't activated either because a fault code was generated by the cluster because of the speedometer. Apparently entering the navi code while the fault exists does not unlock the navigation.

Two weeks! That's a drag. I guess you'll just use the HUD until then?

You really oughta demand for a new car replacement with so many problems. Shouldn't it be covered under any Lemon legislations?

Lemon laws require the same issue to exist 3 times concurrently I think.

or consecutive days out of service. In florida 15 days out of service + 1 addtional repair attempt/inspection or 30 days cumulative.

Its wise to keep track of your "out of service" days even if they are spread out.

I'm so sorry your new car is giving you this kind of trouble. What would be painful to me is knowing that the "techs" at my dealer will be taking apart and putting back together the dashboard of my brand new car. A "full day" to install could mean lots of dismantling . .

Watch out for 1st year of new BMW models. So many things new - engine, transmission, steering, so many more electronics, personally I'd wait and wait.
