Ventilated Seats Worth the Cost?

I have the ventilated seats on my F10 and I feel no discernable difference whether it's turned on or off. BMW should make it cool the seats with an air conditioning duct or something. Anyone else unhappy/happy with ventilated seats on the F10?

I was about to make this same thread. I'm thinking of taking this package off my 550i order cause I went to test drive the 550i(again) and asked if they had a vehicle with this so I could try and was told be the CA it was basically useless. So I'd love to hear some opinions also.

This description makes it sound like you have to have the control turned up to maxium for cooling to occur: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...ntilation.html Can you control the fan speed?
Anyway, it appears from the description that the primary benefit is moisture control and removal of excess moisture from sweating. The primary benefit might be on longer drives. Would be interested to hear other opinions on this also.

I have ZAV on my '08 X5 4.8. I live in Atlanta, and its is hot here (as it seems most places these days). I can really only tell a different once the A/C actually has cooled off the interior of the car. It at times can get cool to where you want to turn it down to the lowest speed (I have three speed settings) and sometimes off. It is certainly not like an A/C vent, which in theory sounds good, but it would get too cold. When running and as the cars interior cools, the seat starts pulling the air through through it (kind of like your HVAC return in your home). I recently test drove, and ordered a new 5, and to me it seemed like the ZAV worked better than it does in my '08 X5, so maybe some improvement has been made. Based on what options you select, the net add will probably only be $1950. It it worth it? Well, if you are in the car a lot and live in a city where you have long periods or hot weather, I would say YES. But then even for me, who doesn't drive that much, I still enjoy having it. Leather is much more comfortable and cool when it can breathe. In the end, its one of those options you cant add later, so if in doubt, get it out of the gate. Buyers remorse sucks!

Personally, I wouldn't spend the money -- they are pretty expensive. I recently rode in a friend's new Acura RL with vented seats. The sensation was weird, not all that pleasant to me. Felt like wetness on my, well, you know... I suppose in a very hot climate it might help. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned it only helped after the cabin cooled down. By then, you may not need the extra ventilation of the seats. Ditto for long drives, I would think adequate cabin cooling would reduce the necessity for ventilated seats. At least, I've never had an issue with all my non-ventilated seats.

The main reason I was thinking about getting them is for when my wife is gonna be in the car as right now in her jag when it's been parked for awhile in the sun her beige leather gets really hot and hurts her legs specially if she wearing a skirt. And her car is white with light colored leather I'm getting my 550i jet black with oyster and black int. I'd just like to cool those seats asap when we get in the car. I probably won't use them unless it's for her. Btw I live in Atlanta so yeah it get pretty hot.

They're not critical. Once you have them though - they're addictive. I would miss them if I bought a car without them, but if you've never had them then you don't need them.

I also think the ventilated seats look better because of the perforated leather.

Maybe setting the AC to split between upper and lower vents until the car cools down would help.

I have them and love them for 4 reasons:

a) They really cool you down in very hot climate. I live in Houston. 104 today... Max fan speed and you feel refreshed.

b) When you turn them on, a delicious new leather smell fills the cabin.

c) The Active function moves the bottom cushion, which in long drives is fantastic. No back -or butt- pain any more.

d) Love the look of the perforated leather!

After you add sports package and premium package, the incremental cost is only $1500.

The effect is subtle. You don't really feel anything from the seats. It's what doesn't happen that is significant... your fanny and back don't get damp from perspiration.

I have them in my new 550, I have had them in several previous cars. I like them, but I also think I have gotten used to them. Personally, I think that the ventilation on my 2010 F-150 King Ranch is much more noticable than that on the BMW. However it is nice for long rides, and also if you live in hot climates its nice to have because it does make a bit of a difference in cooling you down.

Good marketing.

Xenon lights were not critical until they were offered as an option - and now everyone wants / needs them.

Before that were features like comfort access, navigation, iPod adapter, satellite radio, auto dimming mirrors, heated seats/wheel,etc. Now almost every luxury or near lux car has these features.

Fast forward to ventilated seats, rearview camera, park distance control, active blind spot, lane departure, soft close doors, adaptive drive, night vision, etc.

Good marketing creats customer demand. We are all addicts.

The old adage has a slight twist now: "Invention is the mother of necessity". Our lives are filled with things that weren't needed until they were invented, and now we can't live without them. It's deeper than just good marketing. Probably a great thesis topic for a psychology PhD candidate.

Never knew anything about these seats until I bought my wife a MB GL550. "What's this button for? ooooh. aaaaah." I have since decided that my next car will have ventilated seats. Checked out Porsche seats, Jaguar, MB and BMW Best fit for my backside is the Jag.

Just a little cool trivia...Porsche seats suck. BMW and MB blow. Not sure what the Jag seats do, but they do it well...

I have the seats on my current 550i and I had them once in the past. Unless You live in an extremely hot, humid climate or you extra cash to burn the ventilated seats are not worth $1500. They are probably not worth $700 for most of us.

I took an Infiniti M37 for a test drive with the ventilated seats. There were several things I did not like about the M37, however, I loved the ventilated seats. I don't have extra cash to burn - so I'm hoping more car companies start including this option to keep up with the competition versus a big-buck-extra-profit-for-the-car-company-feature.

Other things that I once thought were foolish, spendy luxuries that I now feel are "must-haves":
  • Auto dimming rearview mirrors. (I hate when I get a loaner without them);
  • Bluetooth
  • Voice commands
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Comfort access
  • Parked car ventilation
  • HD radio (I never listen to FM - just iPod, Sirius and AM news - and thought HD was just plain silly for AM. Wrong.)
  • RTTI

I suspect I will come to feel the same way about Active Cruise and Auto High Beams, once I actually have a car that has them. The only gadgets I remain immune to are HUD, side view cameras and Night Vision.

I thought HUD was stupid, until I realized it could show directions from the Nav - and you can be displaying other things on the iDrive while still getting the directions on the HUD.

Side view... I've got a number of blind corners around here that this could help with. Think it depends on your city. We have lots of bikers that are hard to see.

Night Vision - think this is useless until they integrate it into the HUD somehow.

This whole week we have been at over 100 degrees almost every day in Houston. That, combined with a >90% humidity made the "feels-like" temperature in the 105~109 range. Add to that having to wear a suit to work. That is insane. But as soon as you turn on those ventilated seats on max power, you may as well be in Syberia. Ahhhhh.

It is one of those options that, at least during the summer, you will be glad you ordered it, day after day after day.

Now, if only I can get those seats for my office... that's an idea!
