The salesman makes a % of profit as commission. The actual base pay is minimal. Kind of like a restaurant server, who gets paid $3-4 an hour and relies on tips. Honestly, not a great practice in my opinion, but that's how the US does it.
In Germany, practically everyone is salaried, including salesmen for all kinds of stuff. And the BMW salesmen actually know their stuff, yet won't hassle you. Imagine me, a tourist, sitting in the 6 or 7 various models at a BMW dealer in Germany
