Exclamation 2004 x5 Engine Coolant Warning

have a 2004 BMW x5.

Recently, the engine coolant low warning has come on. I checked the levels and they are down. I read on this forum that this does happen from time to time and the levels can be topped off with Distilled Water. It also stated that BMW knows these levels can lower in time even without any major problem like a broken hose or leak.

My questions are:

1. Can I buy any 'phosphate free' coolant and fix the problem myself? I just bought the car from a friend and the warranty just expired and I feel a trip to the dealership would take most of the day and be more expensive than necessary.

2. Is the BMW coolant they use at the dealership really any different than anything I can buy from the parts store and put in myself?

Any help would be appreciate, thanks so much.

Our X5 needs a coolant top-off once or twice a year. I just use distilled water. For the amount of coolant you're replacing it won't matter in terms of hot weather or cold weather performance.

If it needed more than 2 or 3 top-offs a year, I'd start looking for (and repairing) leaks.

Alright, so what if the levels as they are now are REALLY low ?

I cannot use all distilled water as a replacement for coolant can I?

Since BMWs need 'phosphate free' coolant, can I just go to the store buy some and put it in the coolant tank myself?

Thanks so much.
