1998 740i - Electrical issues

Hello everyone. We are new to this site and have enjoyed reading all the helpful information supplield by informed generous people.
Electric issues that hve occured over the past few weeks are: Trunk not opening, sunroof not closing, radio not coming on, windows not working. All of these symmptons come and go. We have the Bentley manual. Where should we start?

I would start by checking battery voltage, as low voltage will cause the ECU to go crazy and do some weird stuff.

Normal voltage is 14.4v with engine running
12.6v with engine turned off

SOunds to me like its the ignition switch. Actually I would put money on it! Replace your Ignition switch and all will be fine. Heres a write up on how to do so. not hard at all!

HUGE +1.......Ignition switch is faulty...replace...$50-60 item at BMW...your electrical gremlins will go away

Well check the fuses under the hood

I had similar electrical problems including the engine shutting down while driving.. Pretty scary when the steering wheel locks up going 50. I replaced the ignition switch and everything works fine again.
