Not Liking the 2011 iDrive Navigation

Here is a recent screen grab I took while driving around. I'm not in some off the beaten path area in some shady corner of the country, I'm in Los Angeles.

This pic displays the difficulties with this new navigation at its worst, showing not a single street name. To be fair under normal operation I do see a sprinkling of street names, but never the important ones. Many times I'll see a bright orange road coming up, you know a major road, and the navigation will never give me the privilege of knowing the name of the street. I've found myself looking at REAL STREET SIGNS.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose!?

If I'm just being a noob and I have severely overlooked a setting somewhere I will be more than happy to be embarrassed at the cost of fixing this.

Any one else having these problems? Other nav thoughts or comments?

Try zooming in to the 400ft level. I know (at least in 3D Perspective mode) that at that resolution it shows *every* street name.

I would check to see if you have a setting turned off somewhere.

I agree with the OP. While this gen I drive is much better than the previous gen, the lack of street names is quite annoying.

The amount of street names displayed varies on the view and if on the main screen or the split screen.

Anyone have a screenshot with the nav actually showing useful information? The OP shot looks like there should be a soundwave going from left to right.

Truth be told, the nav from bmw SUCKS! Try looking up Office Depot or Staples and you'll see what I mean. Had I known, I would have saved the few grand on the nav and bought the Tom Tom and then added the Darth Vader voice application to give me directions for a couple hundred of dollars instead.

Zoom in to 400ft. iDrive does an adequate job at everything it was designed for. And it won't get stolen when some scumbag smashes your window and steals your tom tom out of your glove box.

No street names? You are kidding, right?
I am scheduled to order my car tomorrow with nav. I like that I will be able to see the radio info on the screen but if the nav sucks that makes for a very expensive display.

It does show the names, just not at that view magnification, take a look at Google maps and zoom out, eventually the street names disappear.

Having it split screened doesn't help either.

Why would I leave my droid in the car?

These are not the droids you are looking for.

Because you want it to get stolen so you can get an iPhone.

Thanks OP for the post. I'm seriously considering a new 3 series lease and had planned to get nav. Now, maybe not. I do love the nav on my Droid Incredible, but it's nice to have it on the screen in the car. not sure it's worth another $25/month on a lease, though.

I was told that the new nav is very good (I guess the older system was terrible). Does everyone agree that the nav is relatively weak? Thanks for the input.

Plus it makes the car look better. Seems more like a luxury car with the screen and the idrive knob. Sure, laugh if you want, but it's true. I hadly ever actually use the nav, but I'm glad I have Idrive.

I just picked up my 2011 335 on Saturday. I had an 07 335. The 2011 nav is very different from the 07. Takes a bit of getting used to. But its definitely better than the old system, IMO.

And please don't base you decision to buy a veh on the nav unless you drive ALOT and it's your main selling point. Granted Infiniti, for instance, may have better nav. But I would buy an Infiniti vs a BMW just for the nav.

I have zero sense of direction, so nav is very important for me. That said, I do have the Droid Incredible, which is awesome. But honestly, I agree with matts that the car looks better with the nav screen than without.

Mine did not come with a nav dvd(apparently it was misplaced by dealer), But the dealer ordered and got me a brand new(2010/2011 ?) dvd and it works as a charm.
I,very frequently, drive to Toronto and it has been very very helpful to me !

I totally understand no sense of direction. That was my reason for getting nav in the 07. And I was re-locating. Now with the 2011, my first impression was, "I don't like this!" I didn't even trust it to get me to my destination. But I'm warming up to it now after just four days. Good luck!

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet but the nav option gives you a lot more than just the navigation. It gives you much more control over the car's functions, particularly the radio, HVAC and other controls. It also adds voice commands for more than just the bluetooth phone.

Try it out at the dealer. I like the perspective view better than the top down that is pictured here.
