Right side of steering wheel

I've searched and haven't found any answers. The right side of my steering wheel isn't working. That would be the cruise control and the R/T button. I'd really like to get the cruise working. The R/T I'm not even sure what that does. What and where do I start ?
PS. I thought my E36 was fun to drive. This one is just awesome!!!!

The R/T button toggles between the radio and phone (if so equipped).

It may be a bad slip ring, item 2: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=32_1163

Or, bad button.

That happened to me once on my first '97 E39. The dealer explained to me that, oddly enough, when buttons on one side of the wheel stop working, it is the switch mechanism on the OPPOSITE side that has failed. They replaced the opposite side switch and all was good again.
