E46 318i 1999 year Auto Transmission........

Hi guys,
recently bought bmw 318 e46 1999year and surprise got first problem with auto transmission. while driving gears slips, goes to limp mode and warning light comes near gear light, when engine turned off for 5 minutes it drives and startes again. yesterday changed the fluid and filter, the old fluid was absolutely s***, friction metal particles all over the pan. But the problem still exists!!! the fluid used was Valvoline type D, as far as i know recommended for bmw. the mechanic guy told me probably flushing the gearbox might help otherwise change the transmission....
what would you guys recommend? i'm really dissappointed with bimmers, now starting to regret my purchase, wish i knew these common problems before....

I am not certain but in us model early 323's ( pre9/99) had the old style gm trannies the e36 had. And when I say e36 I mean any auto e36 transmission will work. Heck you can even find them in Cadillac Catera's and Isuzu Axiom's! Search for a GM 4L30E Transmission

Hi Swiss, thanks
the gearbox on mine is GM4L30E. took it to the transmissions specialist, scanned the car, and says gearbox is gone, need to be changed...the fluid which was changed he says it was sticky, but i'm wondered if the fluid change to the proper one Mobil LT71141 could solve the problem?? specialist says it won't make any difference. I still hope that maybe changing fluid would solve...i don;t know, anyone been in this situation before?

hi oscar,
i sold my car as it is at the end...gearbox needed to be changed or refurbished, for refurbish i was aksed 1200 in guildford, but you can find another second gearbox and install, but it would cost you around 800-100 anyway and it is a risk buying second gearbox.
i was told different opinions regarding what might go wrong, one garage told, it might be the sensors inside the gearbox, another transmission specialt told straight that gearbox is dead. they need to open gearbox and then will be abale to tell what's wrong with it, you have pay for this anyway. there is no cheap way i'm afraid.
i'm just disappointed with this model, will never buy again this old model bmws.
i would advise you, if you really want to drive this car, then repair it, refurbish the gearbox, expensive but safest option.
good luck mate!

dear toptech , i missed your location .try to use some one's airflown senser meter ,is black part controlling the amount of air flown into car engine ,replace it [while car swiched off] and try it ,is very easy to do ,and if light didnt come up ,then try to buy second hand or new [up to you ] it will last for another two year . be sure nothing wrong with your gear box . good luck.
