Smile E60 550i 2010 vs 2009 vs 2008

Hi all, first post!

I'm in the market for E60 550i w/ manual transmission. I just learned that 2010 has the M-sport package whereas 2008 or 2009 doesn't. Is it worthwhile to wait for the availability of 2010 in CPO or should I get a 2008 or 2009 w/ sports package for now?

Also, I think for 2008, the nav is DVD based and 2009 it's hd based, is that all the difference? For 2010 the m-sport package is the special thing added that year?
Are there any other differences among 2008, 2009, or 2010 550i?

Does anyone know why is it so hard to find manual transmissions with 550i and do I have to wait for another year for the 2009s to come off lease and a year after that for 2010?

Thank you all,
Attila

The other thing to consider is that the 2010 has the new version of the I-drive with a better screen. The differences in I-drive is that the 2008 has the regular I-drive, the 2009 has the regular I-drive with a revised controller and only the 2010 has the new I-drive. Definitely wait for a car with the M-Sports package - it makes the E60 look so much more aggressive and in my opinion better.

I think the current figure is that only about 7% of all cars sold in the US have a manual tranny.

550 w/6 MT is hard to find but absolutely worth it.

Thank you.

Is there a difference look-wise externally between 2008/2009 550i w/ sports package and 2010 w/ m-sport?

Very much so... the sports package does not have the m-tech body package or the style 172 wheels. Also, the m-sport package adds the m-tech suspension which is different than the normal sports suspension (IIRC). That being said, the m-tech bumpers and side skirts can always be added to a vehicle after purchase for not-too crazy $$ -- all depends on how much of a price difference you're finding between the years.

Good luck on your decision!

Indeed. I have a '10 550I with the M pkg and it is very nice. I was going to get a MT, but was talked out of it by my sales person. I would say go with the 2010. Good luck with the MT.

Awesome. It's decided then for 2010 550i. =)

BTW, does anyone know of any good site where fellow bimmer enthusiasts sell their car other than craiglists or the bmwusa model search?

thanks again

Roadfly has a decent selection of BMWs and try the website for the BMW Car Club of America. I just checked the BMW Car club website and there are none listed. Perhaps you can look at cars.com. Looking at cars.com there are no manual 2010 550is listed. There is one with the M-sports package in white.

Happy hunting!

KBB is also good - its custom filtering by vehicle packages/options is pretty impressive. Alot easier to weed out the vehicles if they lack something like the sport, prem, cw packages, etc.

I own a 2010 550i and love it. Some of your information seems incorrect, though:

1) The M-sport package has been available on the 550i since 2008.
2) The hard-drive-based iDrive system is for 2010 only, not 2008 or 2009.
3) I think (but I'm not sure) that the 2010 550i M-sport also has some minor trim details different from the '08 and '09 models: I believe the steering wheel is different, and I think there are more M-labels in the car (dead pedal, door jamb) and the anthracite (dark gray) headliner is also I believe 2010 only.

If I were you, I'd take a look at 08 and 09 M-sport 550is that are available to see whether you care about the non-HD based iDrive (some have complained that it's really slow compared to the HD-based iDrive) and whether you notice the different interior trim items.

You nailed it. 3) is pretty much the reason for me to hold out for 2010. Since I want to keep my car for a long time, I'd rather wait to get the perfect or near perfect one rather than regretting it later.
For 08/09 550i I think the package is called Sport Package instead of M-Sport Package and the most noticeable item is the steering wheel. For 2010, 550i has both Sport Package and M-sport Package. Externally, I can't really tell the difference between 08/09 or 2010 as they really look the same on the pictures.

What are you planning to spend ? I just sold some clients a 08 550iA tonight, a CPO unit with 43k on it warranty through 4/12, it set them back $28,875 before tax

I'm willing to pay for the "perfect" car but of course it has to be a good deal.
Just before deciding on 2010, I was thinking about 2 2008 CPO about 40k but I thought they were a little steep for 2008 even though they have low miles (24k miles) and good options (too bad m-sport package is not available on 08/09).

The problem is the 6 speed manual. I saw some really nice cars w/ the options I want and even w/ the colors I want (I like white or one of the blue shades) and only 5k miles on them too EXCEPT they are automatic only.

Yeah, good luck on your quest. I passed on a 09 ///M3 4D manual today, it was really nice, I drove it last week and i think they no saled it again today

I'm looking for the same car, but I'm less inclined on white. 2010 MTs are just not out there...

Since 2010 is the last year for the NA 550i, that's the car I would want to buy, most of the bugs are gone and the engine is awesome, that would be my choice!

Got someone around where I live trying to have someone to take over his lease of 2010 550i (right after 1 year in a 3-year lease). The buyout price is $55625, which I think is a little steep. What do you guys (gals) think?

Whats the mileage on the car, brand new the car's msrp is over $70,000 depending on your options and the car is barely a year old. What are the details, options, mf, residual, need to know this stuff to make a good judgement call on your lease vehicle.

What is the difference between the M package and regular Sport Package, like the one I have on my '08?

For those who care, the suspension is different. I frankly can't tell the difference but I'm sure most people who are better drive than I will think the m sport package suspension is tighter and better.

For me, the main differences are cosmetic (m steering wheel, m shifter for manual transmission, and other cosmetic stuff in the cabin). I believe externally they look the same (at least from what I can tell).

I saw the window sticker and the MSRP is over 70525. It has premium, m-sport, cold weather, value package (nav, ipod, hd radio), active steering, comfort access, logic 7. It's fairly loaded except the HUD I think. It's by no means a "BAD" deal but ...

Also, I prefer white/beige color scheme but right now it's space gray/black which is NOT bad but still not what I'd prefer if I have a choice. It's about 10k miles.

Just to compare, there are a couple fully loaded 2010 550i being advertised by owners for 53k and 54k but of course these are automatic (otherwise, I might've pulled the plug after some negotiation).

For these lease-takeover, I'd gladly do it for 52k but for 56k I'm not sure. Let me know what you guys think so I can make an informed decision. =)

Thanks all

Wish your buddy lived in Florida. ;-) I'd take that color combo... perhaps a smidge closer to 50K.

LOL, not my buddy. I like white but I'll take any color combo for the right car (maybe not red or green) but frankly I agree with you the main problem is the price.

This isn't true, unless I misunderstand what you mean by the "M-sport package"

Well, reading further on, perhaps the cosmetics are different. I doubt the bit about the suspension, though.... I think you can research it on their site.
