Seat/steering wheel tilt

Today my steering wheel tilt and driver seat power functions aren't working. Buttons on the steering wheel work fine.

Takeing a guess that it's either a connector, or worse the module. Anyone have this problem? Im going to look at it when I get off work. Hopefully I have enough room under the seat since I have it set to the lowest position.

It is without a doubt that the connector under the plastic section on the driver's seat has broken and become disconnected. It is a common problem on the E38. It is located right under the lumbar controls on the plastic section on the left side of the driver's seat.

I tried a few solutions but none worked, so I just set the seat and steering wheel where I wanted them and never touched it again.

+1, most of us probably had to deal with this by now. Simple seat control module replacement.

LINK: Part #7.

And it's clipped behind the seat trim, where the two larger buttons plug in. Follow the instructions for removing the trim to replace the module.

well i just came home from work. like i thought, the tilt and seat control are on the same circuit. the circuit is getting voltage, so thats good.

i figured its the module though. i was really hoping it wasnt under the seat. luckly its on the side like you guys have shown above.

is the problem something like it has just burned out? it does have to work every time i get in and out of the car, so it would be logical. i guess i'll have to inspect it and see what is going on under there. loose wire or otherwise. i wonder if i can test it out somehow? like taking it off the car and powering it testing the circuits?

if its not worth the trouble i might just go ahead and take a trip to the dealership and see if i can get it ordered. maybe they have one in stock too, expecially if its pretty common to go out. again, this car is pretty easy to work on.

i popped off the trim panel to find that someone had epoxied the connector to the module. what a damn mess. hopefully i can salvage the connector. i'm guessing the locking latch had broken off or something. i did however get the seat and tilt to work. but for how long? so i left the panel unscrewed. i'm sure i'll have this problem again, soon.

i wonder if the connector is available by itself. i would have no problem cutting it off and installing a new connector. i guess ill take a trip down to the dealership tomorrow and see what i can find. i also need a new auto/manual switch. maybe they have them in stock, would be nice.

seriously, who the hell does crap like this? i try not to ghettofy my car by doing things right the first time.

Uh, test it? Check the circuit? Again, just replace the module.

Yes, when you wiggle it, it should all work again. That is the problem, it's not burnt out. That is actually how you test to see if it's the module - and 99% of the time it is the plastic components of the module itself and the connection (or lack thereof) that results.

From the "Seat Control Module" post on e38.org - "It's likely that the electrical connector has popped out or that the black plastic frame into which it connects has broken, a common problem. You can try to crazy-glue the plastic back together so that the connector can plug into it or buy a new seat control module."
