How to remove shark fin? XM antenna

I have an 02 745i, I'm installing xm and was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the shark fin antenna. I wan to try and install the xm antenna inside it. I already built a custom pod in the headliner by the mirror for the xm display i will post pics later.

that sharkfin is the factory antenna. Im sure if you removed it you would have some problems with the GPS. Would prob be best if you found a way to use the same antenna for the sat radio or install the sat radio antenna on the trunk lid.

More than likely you have to remove the headliner inside the car to get to the "fins" bolts behind it

I've tried keeping it inside on the dash or rear deck to avoid the cheap look of the antenna on the roof etc... The metallic tint in the windows all but kills reception so you need to mount it on the exterior. It sure would be great if you could hijack the shark fin and tie in the sat radio. I wouldn't think BMW would have different shark fins depending on options?????

I dont want to get rid of the shark fin. I want to install the xm antenna inside it. I hate showing aftermarket stuff on the outside or inside. I have removed the headliner before i dont remember seeing any bolts.

Its dark out so sorry for the poor pics. I cut out the center of the panel then used fiber glass to mount the bezel for the xm. I dont like sticking objects on dashboard takes the look away from the car

i'm pretty sure the shark fin is a solid object, so i dont see you being able to stuff anything in it... most xm antennas arent picky as to their mounting location, and ive even seen in some circumstances where you can mount them in the dash and still receive a usable signal... keep in mind xm also has ground repeaters for signal as well...

Yes it would work inside but the problem is i have both my front and rear windows tinted so reception sucks. the repeaters work great around the city but you loose it out in the rural areas. The pic shows the antenna not being solid.

Yes,the only way to remove it is carefully.Heat gun or hair dryer and dental floss. If flossing doesn't cut it,stronger string that wont damage the paint surface can be used as alternative.

shark fin removal

the one on my 2004 545i: the outer painted cover was just glued on with a type of rubber sealant to keep the water out and it has 3 plastic tabs that fit into 3 holes (3 if I am remembering correctly), you just need to slowly separate the sealant (tooth loss sounds like it would work to "saw" it loose) then slowly pry it up and out of it's mounts (3 pins I was talking about). after the cover is off there is 1 torx screw in the front holding the inside circuit board and large clear plastic cover to the roof then there are 2,3,or 5 wire connections.

mine has 3 coax connectors and 2 longer wires that have connectors under the headliner. my car antenna was melted from a house fire when it was in the garage so I have now bought 2 used antenna's off the internet and the first one only had 3 coax connectors when I pulled mine off it had these and 2 additional wires that were longer. I found another one and bought it only to find when they removed it the 2 outer coax connectors were broken off the circuit board --so be careful they have connectors that will unclip if you press the little tab first DO NOT PULL on them ESP. SIDEWAYS! the center one is molded into the die cast metal and won't break off.

there is a little room under the clear cover to mount something very small but all 3 of the ones I have--have different configurations on the circuit boards so you will just have to disassemble yours to see, I would just leave the clear cover off if I needed more room because it isn't sealed off completely so it isn't totally waterproof that is why they seal the outer fin to the roof i'm sure, because there is a large hole in the metal roof under it.

long but I hope it helps, use google and search and you will find pics esp. on ebay where they are separated and you will see what i'm saying. that drawing is close but not showing it all.
