E82 1M Coupe (2011 - 2012)
In many ways the spiritual successor to the E30 M3. Powered by a M derivitive of the N54 the inline six makes 340hp and giving the 1M a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds.

BMW 1 Series M Coupe - Limited to 2700 copies, three colors and manual transmissions

As dual-clutch transmissions, all manner of computer whiz-bangery, and endless factory customization options become the norm for production sports cars, BMW aficionados longing for the clutch pedal days can breathe a sigh of relief. According to information recently leaked from a BMW press event, BMW's much-anticipated 1 Series M will reportedly be a limited-run, three-pedal coupe, with three color choices.

While most of the car's specifics are still under wraps, attendees of a BMW press event recently learned three key parts to the 1 Series M equation. The bright orange paint that we've seen in teaser videos and spy shots is called Valencia orange, and will be one of three colors offered; the other two will be Alpine white and Jet black.

BMW plans to produce no more than 2700 copies of the coupe, which is set to make its debut as a 2011 model, for added exclusivity. And for purists, the 1 Series M coupe will be clutch pedal-only, eschewing BMW's dual-clutch transmission for a sole-choice manual.

The source at the event also confirmed that M3-style side gills will make it to the production model, which we've only seen so far in camouflage or under covers.

When the 1 Series M debuts, it will have to beat the performance of the fastest 1's four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. We're still unsure of all the performance bells and whistles BMW is likely to shoehorn into the compact engine bay.

With a 1 Series coupe that already has M3-esque performance, how fast will a 1 Series M need to be to earn your vote? And is offering the 1 Series M with a manual only a good idea?

I think the 300 hp 300 lb-ft torque engine mentioned above is a 6-cyl turbo engine.

Will a small displacement high perf diesel ever be considered for a One series M car bound for the States? Still, that Valencia Orange one-er in M trim, is, well-- intriguing. Yes, I'd like one as a back up car for my 3 series which I already own- a "one" is still in the dream stage right now.

Only 2700 copies are going to be produced, well you know that they will go for well north of MSRP. I really was interested in getting one too, I don't think thats going to happen.

Yep, it's gonna suck, price-wise. Dealers are already drooling over this I bet, although the lack of a no-skill-required transmission may limit poser demand... No red exterior makes it a non-starter for me.

I'm not sure I believe that 2700 thing.

I want this car.

I want it in dark blue, and I would never pay over MSRP, but I really want one.

Be a real man, or woman, and get a M3. Bet you'll pay about the same!

Well, there are always fools out there who will pay through the nose to have the latest and not greatest (in this case). I agree it makes more sense to buy an M3 considering the 1M is not a true M since it doesn't have a M engine. History will not be kind to this car...

Nah, BMW will build as many as they can sell.

Lawsuits be damned. Anyone remember the E28 M5 lawsuit?

BMW has hinted 2011 volume at 800 units.

That's awful. Especially considering the pre-introduction press points about it being an "accessible" M car.

As I'd spec it, it comes to about $55K. I'll probably do that, but paying over MSRP because of artificial supply constraints would be a very tough pill to swallow.

Go for Euro Delivery - will be $3000 less and if you drop Convenience Package you will end up with 47000 USD price

Wow, 55K and with lousy lease numbers, yikes.

Makes my 850 a month tax included 64K MSRP M3 looks cheap.

Agreed.

Same goes for my $700 a month $68K MSRP M3 Sedan...

$55,000 plus the dealer mark-up, which will really hurt things. Ouch.

Thanks!

I really liked the car, which makes writing the story easy. I pounded most of that out on the flight home while the others slept.

The M3 is still a better "GT" car as a daily driver, but the 1M Coupe will be more fun (and less expensive to run) on the track.
