Stomp Test?

I'm still trying to work out the bugs in my newly acquired 525I. How do I get the codes to flash in the display? I have tried to stomp the gas pedal five times in five seconds and nothing happens. Is there a setting somewhere that I missed?

Turn key to run and immediately stomp 5 times. Wait a sec and the codes will start to flash using the check engine light.
Does your check engine light work?

I tried this several times and check engine light just stays solid. Car seems to run fine no misses, just trying to see whats been stored in the past. Stomp test just isn't working.

Er......maybe your car has NO codes stored? i.e. everything is ok? You're not going to get historical records out of your stomp test. You probably bought a good car. Of course, if you feel the urge to spend some good money, check out the thread on the 89 535 front suspensions, its important, you can always buy the full kit and keep it at home till there's some damage, or until the urge to do something to your car passes. (tongue firmly in cheek )

I'll send you a link privately with a to-do list you might want to check out for a regular short or long term maintenance regime. Cheers.

The stomp test should still work even if there are no error codes stored. In fact, if there are no error codes stored, the stomp test should show a code of 1444.

My car has been female owned for the past few years. I'm pretty sure there are codes stored. I need to get the stomp test to work if for nothing else just the history.

Well the stomp test is pretty standard. You must have read about it from more than 1 place by now. There are no special switches or techniques beyond what you've read. If it doesn't work on your car, either the mechanism for the test is faulty or your car did not come with this built in. In either case, the stomp test option is dead for you. Time for you to move on. Purchase a code reader with an obd1 port (good long term investment imo) or bring your car into the dealer or some shop that can check through this. You got the car cheap, there's obviously nothing important wrong with it you just want to look at the codes for peace of mind purposes, which means you wouldn't mind tipping the mech for a scan as well. Make sure they clear the codes once the scan has been done and you've noted any stored codes.

Went to perform the stomp test the other day only to realize my CEL bulb is burnt out. Good grief...

I knew I had a few other bulbs out on that side of the display, and I have been putting off replacing them for some time now. Who knows how long that thing has been out of service. Guess it pays to keep an eye on the bulb checks once in awhile.

I've needed an excuse to get back over to Pope's to get a new skateboard...er Rip-stik...er whatever the F?%* is in style these days
