Download the Pre-Purchase checklist from: www.wuffer.net and go from there. The "cleanest" car isn't worth alot if there are no maintenance records to go along with it...
Good luck.

I have always loved the 8 series, just couldn't afford a 7 and 8 at the same time. If you can afford it, buy it!

You won't know if you can "afford" until it is too late if you don't go through the checklist. Generally these cars will cost you several thousand dollars AFTER they are aquired if there is no maintenance history or if the maintenance has been "sparce". There are countless examples of folks buying a $7-$10K car only to have to dump another $5K into it (even more if you don't wrench yourself). On the flipside, there are also examples of people buying $10-$12K cars that are current with everything and only need oil, gas and filter. Do you homework! Ask questions...

IMO it would be worth 5 grand to get it in order. No other car has these lines.

Maybe, but 6 years ago I bought what I thought was a "great deal" (without the benefit of any of the available forums), and it cost me around $20K to get it into shape. Granted it is one of 16 cars produced in this particular color-combo, but it was still a chunk of change. All I am saying, is do your homework so you won't get disappointed.

I've had a 94 for about 10 years and have really enjoyed it. It had about 60k MI on it when I bought it and it has 103k now. A fan blade once broke off, necessitating a new one. My mechanic said this was not all that uncommon and recommended changing out the fan on most 8's just because, if the original is still on the car. The front seats have needed readjusting which is also common. I would recommend buying a solid car in a color you like and going with it. The 96 and 97 are the best years with the 4.4 engine rather than the earlier cars with the 4.0 engine. 8's are special cars and the 840's are much more trouble free than 850's.

That is a complete myth. I have been repairing/restoring 8-series for a while now and I have seen both V12's and V8's have problems. The early V12's are alot simpler than the later V12's and all V8's. Currently have a 97 840 here that is plagued with problems. My personal V12 has nearly a quarter million miles on it, and is still running strong.
