A nest of crickets making wild and passionate love in the luxury of a Bimmer dashboard?

More seriously, it could be the little fan inside the A/C control panel. It is used to suck cabin air thru the thermistor for the automatic temperature function.

The fan that cools the ECU box is mounted on the firewall on the driver's side. If it is making a noise it will sound like it is behind the instrument panel. Mine was making a chirping noise intermittently, not really a buzzing noise. Do a search on "cricket noise" if you think that may be your noise and want more info.

Fan was a DIY change and cost about $80 if I remember correctly.

I have the same thing happening to me. Just started a couple days ago but the one thing I noticed is that it only makes the noise when driving at highway speeds (usually 60 mph or greater) the faster I accelerate the more it goes on. And thats just it, It keeps on going constantly while im driving on the highway and needless to say its VERY annoying. Could it also be the fan that cools the ECU like ails92t said?

Also, I did search "cricket noise" on the forum but most of what is happening to other people is related to the air vent fans and so on. The noise im experiencing happens regardless of the air vents on or off. Most of the other people experience the noise while not moving as well where as I only experience it moving at highway speeds. The noise is nonexistent while stationary/idle or driving normal road speeds. Not sure if anyone knows any more than I do about what it could be...
