I read that correctly right? 35,000 dollars? While I can't say that car isn't spotless I'm not sure if I'd ever pay new car money for an old restored/swapped 2002.

That is probably the nicest 2002 I've ever seen. Not nearly worth the price, though. You could restore it yourself for not even half that.

Depends on what kind of car you're starting with. A good paint job with a fully stripped shell can easily run you $6-10k (and many times more than that if you're going for a show quality finish), and that doesn't include any metal work. And then you've got to do suspension, drivetrain, interior, electrical, etc... Basically, stuff adds up very quickly, and then of course there is the ever-increasing collector value of 2002s which will continue to push the prices up.

Joe...sorry, I just couldn't resist . From what I know, they are very touchy cars and demand a lot of time and money...I don't think a lot of folks would want that. (I'm just stupid enough to love their dorky shape). And, you are one of the good guys (Like I told you at Bimmerfest East, I really admire your choice in profession)...so feel free to ignore my snarky comment. Whaddya say we find you a car first...then a proper engine...then we have a party to put them both together. Whaddya think? Bimmerfest NorthEast!

Im pretty sure if this 1600-02 thing doesnt work out as planned im going to buy a nice e30, or a decent 2002 as mu "summer" car. I lust after both, preferably the '02. but e30's have a special place in my heart since me and my girl took mine out on a date and eneded up making out on the hood. it was like a scene out of an 80's move

Tried that

He won't go anything lower than $3500 which isn't bad but it needs lots of work

I have the Zf tranny in my 328 and a new clutch...

well, i'd never be able to buy that little 2002. not because i think it's not affordable, but rather the owner is looking for a responsible new owner...
