Took a look at this today as a possible project car. Hasn't been run in 3 years. Had a bottom end knock when they bought it. Person they bought it from had started to pull the front end parts off to pull the motor, then abandoned the project and tossed the parts. They think the tranny was OK. Body is in reasonable shape with no rust except the hood has some spots on it where it's been scratched to bare metal. Interior appears about average but we couldn't get into the car to take a good look since the battery was dead and it had been remote locked last time someone was in it.
No way for $1,500, but if it doesn't move in a week or so I might offer $900.........
The guy has a repair shop and 4-5 project cars that he's had for several years. His wife is "helping him out" with them by selling them so they can clear some space in their lot for cars they can make some money on.

Put it in my rotation of DDs, occasional autocross, and some possible track days. Another possibility would be swap the engine and tranny into the 328iC, but that's not a prime consideration.

But I thought it had a bottom-end knock (i.e. death knock)?

The swap would be after a rebuild. If the crank can be reground the rebuild would be about $2K for the parts, maybe less with some judicious shopping. Then I'd see how much of the cost I can recover from a part out of the rest of the car. It's got a set of Bayern Rapp wheels in good condition on it so that's a start.

Just buy the other S54 that Jaymack found. Lots more power and lots less headache.

True, but no chance to break even $$ wise from a part out on the rest of the car, and I'd still need to find the parts for an auto to manual tranny swap. I'm not gonna install an S motor with my auto trans.

Let's see what happens with this M3 project car. I'm going to contact the guy this week and see if he'll charge the battery so we can try and start it. I got the feeling that the $1,500 asking price is very flexible and I can likely get it for <$1K. If that's the case I might make an effort to fix it up to driveable condition.

I don't think I could live with my parents anymore... Moved out sophomore year and haven't moved back.
I love having my own house... Good sense of pride.

Nobody likes making car payments, but if it's a really cool car, I could justify it.

Once I move up a bit more in the world, it's going to be pretty tough to resist taking out a loan for a Boss 302... The reality is that I'm going to keep driving inexpensive cars until I've saved up enough money for a full frame-off resto of my GTO, which will cost about as much as a new M3...

^+1. Leaving the nest is one of the best things a person can do for themselves. I got along with my family very well, yet I moved out a few months before I had graduated from high school. By that point I had been supporting myself financially (to a decent extent, anyway) for the better part of 3-4 years, and most of my friends were a few years older anyway, so they had already moved into their own places, which meant it was very easy for me to move in with them and have some fun times (i.e. party time).

Those are very nice wheels. I've always loved them, and the OEM Style 32 wheels which are somewhat similar. I've never noticed the inboard valve stem in the past, though. Cool little feature. Not so crazy about the keyhole in each cap, however.

I would do mildly distasteful things for a set of 17" style32s in 3series fitment.
