My buddy Austen has this nifty car dealer app that tells him what that car would go for at a dealer auction via the vin. He said 6500-8 so it seems like a decent deal. I'm curious what they'd offer me for the e39, it's one year older, 1/2 the miles, and has a MUCH bigger market than a shoe. So here's to hopping.

jen, i think mileage is a skewed factor alone. since this apparently has all the records, i say the mileage is solid and should not be considered a negative. rather, i believe it would be a testament to the longevity of these vehicles when cared for.

i've got almost 333k on cadence, and i think she'll be due for her first major oil change soon...should still be inder the factory maintenance plan, right??

Got a call about the shoe, she sent me some pics of it not covered in rain lol. Back end looks to have had a sticker on it at one point but the rest looks nice. They are getting back to me on a trade for the 5er, honestly they had better make me a damn good offer because my e39 is worth more than this shoe lol.

Maybe. The shoe is already considered a collector item, and will eventually begin to increase in value, whereas your E39 is going to continue to plummet and likely won't ever go up. Plus, the shoe is faster, handles better, and looks like it was designed in the '60s.

At any rate, if you do pursue it, definitely don't buy until you've had a PPI and have checked for rear sub-frame cracks.

Hate to burst your bubble, but you're never going to find a dealer who will give you as much money as you want for the E39. They're only going to give you trade-in value, which as we all know, is next to nothing.

Yeah Im aware,no bubble bursted lol. I have someone who wants her in the spring for a fair ammount. So in the meantime im going to keep stashing my pennies away, I already have 1/2 of what I want to spend on a M3 put away. Maybe by spring Ill just buy one outright and keep the e39

In the meantime Ill keep car hunting, since Its a hobby of mine.

honestly if they would have offered me $5,000 I would have considered making the trip to look at it, 4 was just a tad to low and they didnt want to play ball. Nice people though, I'd consider buying from them in the future. The lady sent me new pics of the coupe in less that 15min. Which I though was pretty good.

Yeah, working with nice salespeople is worth something. Although my E36 ended up being a good one, I bought it from a super shady used car lot in a bad part of town, and they acted like I was asking them to reverse the rotation of the earth when I asked for a little money off for various things that needed attention. I can't remember if the salesman I worked with actually had all of his teeth... Despite all the warning flags, they had a good rating with BBB and I got lucky.

I'd like to know how all those super shady used car dealerships stay afloat. Buying from one of those is like asking to be scammed. Personally, I would never buy from a used car dealership.

That's definitely what I said (and still say to others), until a super clean E36 popped up at one... All those places do is buy cars from dealer auctions and flip them for a profit. My car had been traded in by its second owner at a Honda dealership. The Honda dealer probably kept it on their used lot for a short period before sending it to auction for a quick sale, which is when it was acquired by the shady used car dealer. At the time, my goal was to find a 100% bone stock and exceptionally clean E36 328 or M3. We all know how hard that task is... When I finally found one, I had to forget about who was selling the car and just focus on the specifics of its condition and history.

But yeah, I never recommend A) buying a used car from a dealer, or B) buying from a seriously shady dealer... I ignored two of my own rules...

Honestly it's more about the car than the dealer. As long as you can get a price you're comfortable with and you've done your due diligence on the car, you should be fine.

On the other end, it's good to have dealer/broker friends. Then you can have them do all the searching for a modest fee...

Yep, this is the idea I followed. Just let the car do the talking and ignore the salespeople.
