So why do a lot of people splurge when they see 95 M3 though? Well at least the guys I've spoken to. Just curious.

I don't think the stealership knows all the info on this car. Looks lower than usual.

Also, the stink eye I got from the wife when I mentioned this might have added a bit to the procrastination.

Then this might be a more intriguing project. They just posted it for the first time so they're still in denial that the car is basically worthless. For $2K it might be an interesting CVT to 6 speed swap project, or find a used CVT to swap in and give to the mother in law to replace her dying '93 Celica. She literally drives < 1K miles a year so even if the used CVT only goes 5K miles that will likely get her past the end of her driving days.

Some people just really want to own an M the average market in my area of the US right now is anywhere between 5-10k for an M3. Also a word of caution: the only time you should see the word "rare" and "M3" in the same sentence are if it's an E30 M3, a sunroof-less E36 M3, or a European M3 that has someone wandered into the US. other than that M3's are by no means rare. The 328i shares more than a few parts with it even. Another thing to be wary of are people who post in all caps lock.

All that being said these are some decent looking M3s but you need to look at them objectively and put price aside if you're seriously thinking about buying one, look into required maintenance on a vehicle that's at least 14 years old. You should always have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle to make sure you're not buying a lemon or a 5 thousand dollar M3 that needs 5 thousand more dollars of work.

Oh, I already have one. I was just thinking about getting a 4D M3, which is getting hard to find. But a 328i would be great too, I just don't know why people are asking so much on C-list when they are close to 200K miles and the car has seen better days.

Hey KDoherty,

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...495009632.html

Here is the one I sent an email about, which would be a nice one to play with. But again, if I can find an M3 saloon, it would be awesome.

Short answer: because they were the only US-imported E36 M3 that were OBD-1.The only year to use the S50B30US engine. It's much simpler to throw a chip in it that than messing with flashing an OBD-2 ECU. ('96-99).

There were some subtle differences body-wise, too. Pre-facelift kidneys, color matched mesh grill under the bumper, etc.

Rare and Hard To Find

Is this one of those "not rare, fairly common" E36 M3's?

"Suspension:
Brand new oem shocks and struts
lowered on H&R sport springs"

Both of these cars appear to be lower with H&R springs ONLY. So both are owned by idiots and both will need new shocks. The second owner is a really big idiot because he just trashed new oem shock with his lower spring. You would thing he would have just got the right shocks for his springs for around the same price.

I don't think the stealership knows all the info on this car. Looks lower than usual.
mileage and a clean (verifiable) title are also factors. however, as ken stated, the //M3 is *not* rare in the e36/46 chassis. also, i do not believe the sedan version of the //M was ever offered in e46 cofiguration.

that being said, a very clean, low mileage, well cared for 318is could probably go for as much as, if not more than, a beat to death //M3 that needs lots of work. remember, most of the guys that buy these think they're 'racecars' and treat them as such. usually with little to no proper care for them.

that being said, if i came across a real //M3, i would be very cautious about pulling the trigger. not because i don't want one, but i'd have to go over it with a fine tooth comb before purchase. and although my current bmw stable suggests otherwise, i *do* have some standards...

Nah I have it. The alternator situation just didnt have a happy ending. And I didnt have 300 to gamble on a new one.

Advance auto is a franchise of douches and the unaware minded (except for the one store close to my house)

so my mom and brother thought it was best to end it. Im kinda uneasy if I can even make money off it even though the rest of car is good besides the body
