So in the near future, I'd say 4-5 months i'm looking to upgrade my daily to something a bit more practical for new england, and my needs. that said, I'm pretty sure that I want an E46 325xi. I'm looking around the 5k range. Craigslist has more than a few right now but I don't have the money, right now. what should i look for on these? obviously the coolant system, and bushings. I've heard the E46 rear sub frame mounts are common though, it's not going to be hooned or tracked though so that's a pretty low level of concern. thoughts? advice? disparaging remarks?

EDIT: not selling the E36 i'm keeping it as a toy.

They have a fair amount more mechanical complexity due to the front diff and transfer case, so you'll want to make sure all that stuff is in good shape.

Should've mentioned e46 wagon. I don't care for the sedans/coupes. Diff and t case are things I figured it didn't have. I would've assumed bmw used a modern transaxle in the front

I don't know if the E46 AWD system is considered to be a "transaxle" or not up front, but it definitely isn't a traditional transaxle like in a transversely mounted FWD car. Instead, it has a transfer case coming off the back of the trans with a separate output shaft going back up front.

It's a standalone unit, with it's own fluid.

e46 XIs have a very low known failure rate of subframe failures its the RWDs ones to worry about

all Xis come with sport struts/shocks as well as reinforcement strut plate (just like the e36 M3) and Xis come with beefier mounts and other stuff compared to RWD counterparts

since your looking at 325 tourings you dont have to worry about dumping the clutch and destroying front axles

Somewhat, except the front axles go through the oil pan.

That picture is identical to how the Rovers are set up. Not surprised since BMW got a good deal of their AWD tech from Rover, but funny to see in a passenger car nonetheless.

Yeah, I don't think the AWD E46s are particularly failure prone or troublesome, but there is just a lot more to keep an eye on. All the seals, boots, CV joints, etc. are going to wear out at some point, and when they do, you have a lot more to deal with.

The 1st and 2nd gen s10 blazers, Jimmy's, and Bravadas all had similar oil pans. Interesting to learn.

I'm willing to bet that he blew his motor driving it hellafast, went hellafastNfurious, blew up his hellabmwengine, and went hellacheap with an M42 engine. I'd be willing to bet that car is not an M3. Someone ask for the VIN.
