grinding noise downshifting into third?
'97 M3 has begun occasionally making a grinding noise when downshifting into third. If I had to guess, I'd say it only happens when RPMs on the downshift would be over 4000 and that even under those conditions it happens well under 10% of the time. It happens as I push the shifter forward into the slot, and the sound it makes and the feel on the shifter is about what I'd expect it to sound/feel like if I tried to ram it into gear withouth the clutch pushed in at all (not that I've tried that!). Whenever this happens, I just pull back, release the clutch and press it in again, and shift normally and it's always fine on the second try, but whatever it's doing has got to be bad for the car. Also, the sound it makes is LOUD and can doubtlessly be heard by other cars around, not to mention my passengers, so there's a minor embarrassment factor as people probably wonder if I know how to drive a stick!!
Any idea what this is? Is it a sign my clutch is finally going bad?
