The Vanos on your BMW controls the variable cam timing based on oil pressure.

If the filter in the Vanos system gets clogged, the oil pressure can vary and not let your engine perform the way it was intended.

ECS recommends a filter change around 30k miles and torque of the sealing bolt 20ft lbs.

I replaced my vanos filter with vanos filter kit 1, I broke a white small ring (next to small ring). Right now I installed the kit with missing the white ring. Is it OK without it? Also the small ring included in the vanos filter kit 1 is thinner than the old one I took out. Is it OK? I have not start my car yet after installed the kit.

We would never recommend installing things with missing parts. It is important to replace any and all broken pieces so that everything will be running in the correct condition.

Just used your ECS kit to replace the filter and o rings. Video was very helpful..thanks.

Question however: The lower O ring that came out was flat and fully filled the gap between the dreaded white spacer and the steel shoulder, whereas the new O ring has a normal circular profile and is much narrower than the gap.

The obvious answer is that it flattens over time, but it does not appear to have the "bulk" to fully fill that gap?

I checked the part number to REAL OEM, and it appears to be the correct part.

Any insights?

BUT, if it doesn't fill the gap the same way as the stock (it's too thin) why would I buy it? Can't you come up with an o-ring that is thicker so it doesn't slide all over the place?

By design during finally assembly the rings are flattened and fully fill the gap. This design allows for a proper seal during expansion and contraction of the metal.

Does the E39 have this kit? my is a 01 525.
