Hey there, and here's the short tutorial. I also have a rag [canvas] top on my Z4si and have had convertibles for many years--they are easy to maintain. If you will do it, is the key. Many do not have the disciplines to stick with it.

I clean dust and dirt off by actually vaccuming [Hoovering as it is] the top with a brush attachment. I also on maybe weekly basis, use one of those sticky paper on a roller, or lint rollers available in most variety stores in the cleaning section; and used for getting rid of pet hair on chairs or lint on your clothing. I have one on a shelf dedicated to the Z4's top. It actually gets these two cleanings more than washings. It keeps the dust off and prevents imbedding.

Then a good light wash, with a very gentle soft brush and splashed water till no more suds. When it comes time every year or maybe even two, [as this car is garage kept and out of winter elements] it gets washed with RaggTop cleaner. Again using soft brush and lots of water. Then dried thoroughly in the sun, and the RaggTop protectant is sprayed on in cross layers, allowed to cure as recco'd and then another layer also applied. Whole thing allowed to cure in sun that day...no moisture on it till much later.

Thats it...but I find the real secret for me is keeping it clean with the Hoover and lint rolling "thingy" -- keeps the dirt from building up in the first place. I even take one on road trips...as the top is often down and FRONT section of hood is exposed to more dirt and debris. Roll it night when hood goes up for overnight at hotel etc. Good luck, on this one.

I just used some water proofing in a spray can that is used for boots and tents and it has worked fine.
That stuff is available pretty much anywhere.

As for cleaning, baby shampoo and a medium stiff nylon brush works for me.

I have used the BMW cleaner and protector but its very expensive. Basically the same technique as raggtop, except that the protector is mixed with water and applied with a sponge. Overall does a good job of removing marks where the frame puts pressure on fabric. Good tips on the roller thingy, i'm going to use that. Thanks!
