How do you break in an engine?

I just got a 1-er with 65 miles on it. It might have driven for demonstration purposes [read: it's probably been driven hard about 10 times].

I know the break-in period is between 12-15,000 miles. What should I do/not do to break my 1-er in properly?

There are specific instructions for this in your owner's manual, which you should read in its entirety.

Basically, take it easy for 1200 miles. Stay below 4500rpm and 100mph. Try to vary vehicle and engine speed; hill driving is good for this. After 1200 miles, start steadily increasing.
