Question 2011 nav dvd

Got my postcard from BMW regarding the new DVD. Has anyone tried it yet? Your thoughts?

I'm not sure if it is the same - I have the 2010 HDD navigation system. I did ask for the map update. It has noticeably better coverage in Northern Virginia. Many roads that were just plain missing from last year's maps are there now.

As I said, this is the HDD version, so not sure if the DVD gets the same updates.

Thanks... I got the 2009.1 Pro DVD but I want to see what other people think about the 2011.1 Pro DVD. I do not want to buy it and find out later that it has issues like some 2010's.

I have been looking at one of the aftermarket ones where the map has been modified to also list speed traps and red light cameras (see http://www.bmwnavigationmaps.com/index.html) I am kind of leary to go the non-OEM route so.

Police speed traps - this is exactly the feature I am most interested in and want others' opinion. Not that I speed a lot, mind you.

At $199, the cost is little prohibitive but compared with a traffic ticket...

Man i'm still stuck with a 2007 disk...

I also have a side question if any of you guys can answer it. Is it normal for the dvd slot to be in use, I mean mine is making noises so I'm assuming its spining the dvd, without the key any where near the car? I actually took out my nav dvd without turning on the car. Kind of wierd I guess since I expect most of the electronics to be turned off. I hope its not running 24/7...

Mine spins as soon as I open the door... I figure that is a normal boot up process. The computer checks the peripherals for proper operation. If you are not getting errors, I would think you are fine...

I'm weary of that site. Is it the actual DVD from BMW? For that price, looks like no.

Did the real time traffic info and speed traps warning work normally?

Mine does it too, and the dealer says it's normal. I hear it even when the car is fully off while the key is in the ignition.

No, it's a copy disk. I believe its called "backup" disk.

I'm in Toronto. Not sure if traffic info works here. What should I take note so I would know if traffic info is working or not?

As for the speed trap, I can see that there are blue "stars" in some intersections. I assume these are the speed traps?

Does it warn you of traffic congestion or accidents ahead and suggests a detour or alternative routes?

Haven't used it extensively yet. I will post it here if it warns me of traffic congestion.

I just installed disc 1 of the 2011 Version. It is part No. 65 90 2 199 843 Professional and OEM through eBay. Neither The Red Light & Speed Cameras nor the Police Speed Traps show up as POIs in iDrive as advertised. I figured maybe I need to also initialize disc 2 to get that working, but both discs seem to be independent of each other. I could not just switch between both discs, but after inserting a disc you have to shut down the system, wait at least 5 minutes and re-start. Can't imagine what a PITA that must be navigating in most Mid-Western states. I am not selling my old 2009.1 Version yet.
The 2011 discs did not come with instructions, so maybe I am doing something wrong.

You need a software update. These features are only available on the latest software at your dealership. The NAV DVD contains the locations of these, but your Nav software is old and does not contain the correct software to use the speed trap locations. The upgrade I think might cost you a couple hundred dollars. Not sure exactly on the price. Since I pretty much know the speed traps where I drive (and I don't usually travel outside of my normal travel areas), I have yet to justify the update. But if I do some distance traveling, I probably will then.

I have the 2010 and the red light and speed cameras it shows are rare. You need to get a radar detector that you download the areas to it. It's more dense than on the BMW disc

Unless the software upgrade contains other improvements as well I will not have it done just for the speed trap stuff. Just installed Trapster on my Hero smart phone and will give that a try.

Nav Questions

I bought the 2010 535i and I guess the maps on the Nav are 2009 (when the car was built). I have couple of questions

1) Does the dealer update the maps based on which year they sell the car?
2) My nav only alerts me with freeway names, for most local streets or intersections it doesn't take the names. For ex: it would announce 'Now turn right' or ' Right turn in 700ft' or so. It never takes the street name for ex: 'Turn right on Saratoga Ave' or some thing similar.

3) Are they supposed to give me a DVD for the Nav ver I have pre-loaded on the car?

This from the guy I bought the 2011 discs from:"OEM BMW navigation discs DO NOT contain red light camera data. Those are only available to those who burn the data onto the discs themselves."

I bought the 2011 version here for my 2008 535xi.

http://www.bmwnavigationmaps.com/

The police traps show up, as do the red light cameras. However, I live in a house that's 5 years old (in a new development) and there are about 14 houses on my street - the disc still only shows one (and it isn't mine). Little annoying.

But works fine.

From what i have read this happens because of radio readiness. The iDrive system turns on in advance when a keyfob is close or the doors are unlocked. When locked, as long as your bluetooth phone is disconnected/logged off, the system will power down.
