So it took me a month and a poor excuse for a road trip, but I've finally passed my 1200. We decided to drive from Chicago to Florida because why not, right? This is my first high-end vehicle and I have to say, I'm impressed. Most of the driving I do on a regular basis is either city or congested highway. I was so happy to get some clear road around Kentucky to open her up. Got her up to 111mph before a big gust of wind blew me out of my lane and I pussied out.
In the mountains, she handled beautifully. I took a detour through Smokey Mountain National Forest, and the times that there wern't slowpokes in front of me, I was able to really push her in the curves. I was super impressed that while I was being shoved from side to side from taking sharp curves at around 60 the traction control didn't miss a step and the tires barely squeaked (I guess I should've gone faster, but it's sketchy with huge cliffs next to you). Even with the 20in performance tires, she held well when we hit snow on the top of the mountain. Now that we've passed the Appalachians and are deep into the flat straights of Florida, I miss those curvy, sketchy roads and can't wait to go back. I might even have to take a couple extra days just to do some extra driving. |

Sweet! Wish I had time to take mine for a road trip. Is yours an M or a Sport with M package?

Have to agree. X5 is the perfect road trip car. Picked mine up on a Friday morning and hit the road that afternoon for Charleston, SC. What an awesome car out on the highway. Didn't go 111, but at 80 it feels like it's still glued to the road.

Nice way to pass the break-in miles. Please let us know if your mpg improves on the way back now that you've reached the 1,200 miles.
For reference, I got 22.4mpg on a 150mi R/T w/an avg. speed of 75mph. Gotta love the 8-spd.

Had my 2011 35d 3 weeks with 600 miles on her, but I am getting only 15MPG in town. I rarely go out of town on the freeways.

So the road trip down is over and the numbers are in. For my 3.5 msport I got 20.2mpg over 1956 miles in 37hrs with an avg speed of 52.8.
Super comfortable drive. If there's anyone out there who hasn't ventured onto some winding roads with their x yet, fill up the tank and go. Now. Long, flat, and fast is fun, but not as much as those country roads. |
