X6 E71 / E72 (2008 - 2014)
The BMW X6 luxury crossover went on sale in April 2008 as a 2009 model year. BMW referes to the X6 as a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) as it combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, xDrive and all-weather ability) with the stance, styling and roof line shape of a coupe. The E71 X6 was built off the E70 X5 (2007 - 2013) platform at BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant. Total worldwide sales were just over 235,000, sold mostly to the BRIC countries. US total sales was 34,082 vehicles.

Question Why an X6? Did you consider a 550ix GT?

I have a couple of questions for X6 owners and lovers.

Its finally come time to replace my E46 330Ci which I love with something bigger. When I mention to people I'm thinking of the X6 they give me an odd look. You know the one where they are trying to figure out how to tell you that you are off your rocker without offending. It seems people haven't figured out how they feel about the X6, yet. Is this just part of the X6 ownership experience?

Anyway, I test drove a X6 50 and was blown away at the power and handling of such a big car. I'm really close to pulling the trigger. I don't have kids just need more room for stuff. The X6 seems right up my alley.

Did any of you also consider the 550ix Grand Touring? It seems like they'd be pretty similar except for the obvious difference in ride height.

Pod 13, considering I live in Italy, the exterior sucked when it launched a few years ago (European model). However; riding in an X6 from a 330Ci is more comfort, power and exceptional performance if you get a chance to open it up. The 550 Gt is elegant in its own right, but that rear end is atrocious.

I think the 550i GT is fine looks wise. Well unless you open just the trunk without the hatch and then its just embarrassing. But after more research, the 550i GT appears to be more of a 7 series car than a 5 series. Who wants to drive a 7?

Looks like my next BMW is going to be an X6. Now to be buy new or used?

What exactly are you looking for when you say that you want something bigger? Something with more cargo space? Something with a bigger rear seat? Or just something with more mass? If you're looking for one of the first two, the X6 is probably not your best bet. Don't take this as a negative view on the X6-- I happen to like it-- but it is not meant for practicality. If you need space, you should consider the GT or an X5 which both have much more interior space in the back seat and cargo area. If you legitimately need more space, the X6 probably won't give you much more than what you have in your 330ci.

The X6 is intended for the same type of demographic as cars like the 6-series or MB CLS-- people that want style and performance over utility. They tend to be higher income and many have more than one car. They don't have to carry a lot of cargo or passengers on a regular basis. As I said above, it's a great car, but make sure you know what you're buying and that it meets your needs.

Excellent points, SARAFIL!

My hauling needs are actually pretty modest. Tailgating gear mostly. I'm not a real estate agent or a soccer mom. Would I trade performance for utility? Absolutely! I have been doing it for 8 years. I mean not totally, but I think you overestimate the size of the trunk. The OEM woofer severely limits the usability of that space and squeezing cargo into the back seat is getting old. Plus, my friends are getting old and they'd rather I had four doors.

I took a test drive in the X5, too. In fact, I didn't even know about the X6. I guess I've been out-the-loop for awhile. Anyway, I thought the X6 drove better than the X5. Now I admit my test drive was short and I don't think the X5 had Adaptive Drive, but my seat-of-the-pants meter told me the X6 will be more fun. Maybe when the X5 and X6 are equipped the same they drive exactly alike?

I thought the GT had promise, but not if its riding on the 7 series suspension. That can't be good. Maybe I should drive one, though.

If they only made a 6-series wagon. BMW Nash Rambler anyone?

Me as well...interior is beautiful but the exterior is just ugly. I've only seen one on the road and it's even worst in person.

The X6 feels slightly less roomy and has a different (lower) seating position than the X5. The amount of passenger room is very similar to a 5 series if I remember correctly.

The X6 is definitely focused more towards performance/design and less towards practically. But the largest reason I currently favor the X6 is because of Dynamic Performance Control ... it really does wonders for the handling capabilities of such a large/heavy vehicle and is not available in the X5 (except for the X5M).

Combined with Adaptive Drive (which includes EDC and Active Roll Stabilization and is available in the X5) the handling is extremely good with almost no noticeable oversteer/understeer (mainly thanks to DPC).

I took home an X6 50i the dealer had on the lot with just about every available option. Plenty big for my needs and still fun to drive. Lots of power on tap.

I am liking Adaptive Drive. Placing Adaptive Drive in sport mode tightens everything up without the ride becoming unnecessarily harsh. With this engaged the suspension feels perhaps a touch softer than my E46. Very Nice.

Parking this beast is going to take some practice. It takes me at least three times to get lined up in the spot properly. I'm sure this will get easier with practice. When navigating a parking garage, I find the parking sensors are screaming at me when (by my estimation) I still have plenty of room between the bumper and the pillar at fault. I wish there was a way to dial down the sensitivity just a bit to become more useful to me. I guess I should just learn to park.

So far, I'm happy with X6.

I checked out a 550 GT but didn't like it at all. What came to mind when I saw it in person was that it looked like a hearse. Not for me.
