Costco 91 Octane Gas

I have a question about what type of gas to buy: I have been buying octane 87 gas at Costco for my previous car, a 1995 Volvo 850 T5R, for years. I have never suffered any ill effects from that grade of gas.

Now, as the owner of a new (used) '01 325i, I know that my car needs octane 91 gas.

My mechanic recommends Chevron 91, but that's about 20 cents more per gallon than Costco 91. Should I spring for the more expensive, name-brand Chevron gas? Or, is Costco gas just as good, as long as the octane content is 91?

I'm thinking of cancelling my Costco card if I can no longer buy gas there. I don't really need to buy pallets of t.p. and paper towels...

Thanks for your help.

Please disregard my question -- I found a thread that discusses this issue in detail. Please be patient w/ me -- I think I finally "get" how to use the search engine to find past discussions topics.

Hi Twizzle:

I'm pretty certain that Costco gas comes from a "top tier" refinery but the gas lacks detergents which are needed to keep your fuel injectors clean over time. I think you are fine buying Costco gas, provided you go to Walmart once every couple months and put a bottle of concentrated Techtron in your tank. A bottle of Techtron runs anywhere from $5 - $7 depending on your location. Techtron is the same additive that Chevron uses which explains the higher cost. If you do a Google search on the topic, you can read more about this. For the record, I use Costco gas all the time and place 1 bottle of Techtron in the tank every 3000 miles. All is good. Take Care,

Been using Costco for past seven years and 97k miles.

I think it's fine. I believe it's all from essentially the same source, anyway.

Nope.

The ultrasensitive ping sensors won't let that happen. However, the ignition will get sufficently retarded so that the car will, indeed, feel retarded. Real sh!tty performance.

Ya gets what ya pays for...

Thanks, I'm sticking with Chevron 91 with Techron. Cuz my car is worth it, and the last thing I want is a retarded driving experience!
