88 m5 ecu

I recently had some upgrades done. Evo cam gear and JC chip, new plugs and wires. Drove the car for a good 6 months and it performed quite well. Eventually it just stalled. My first thoughts were fuel pump because it was sparking fine but just wouldn't turn over. Upon inspection my mechanic informed me the ECU was fried. I've since gotten a few opinions ranging from, the chip overheats the ECU over time, or that the chip simply wasn't installed properly. I've also been told on a 20 year old car ECU's can go bad. Whatever the case may be, does anyone know if the ECU can be refurbished? Is the part available or NLA?
