Title / track name recognition for CD's
I know this uses the widely adopted GraceNote database. Does anyone know if this is held locally on the hard drive and if so is there a way to update it? Obviously as new CD's come out the recognition won't work if the database is out of date.

The short answer to the best of my knowledge, of if it gets music track information from the hard drive or can it be from elsewhere is, the internet data connection can be used for updates
The long answer below is from information in a document downloaded from http://bmw.connecteddrive.info/stage.php I hope this might answer your question... ------------------------ Media Information 22. July 2010 BMW ConnectedDrive services for more infotainment. 11 BMW Corporate Communications Online Update Music Tracks. Online Update Music Track Data allows music libraries on the vehicle's built- in hard disk drive to be updated with missing information about audio tracks, albums and artists. The data is supplied via the internet from an external database. Description: Online Update Music Track Data allows music libraries on the vehicle's built- in hard disk drive to be updated. The hard disk drive is where all music files downloaded to the vehicle from an audio CD, a music player or other data storage device are saved, together with information about track titles, album and artist. If this accompanying information is not complete, the missing data can be found and added by performing an internet update whereby the hard disk drive is connected free of charge to an external online database. Subsequently, when an audio file is played, complete information about the particular track will then appear on the on-board monitor. Models: All models. Required options: BMW Navigation system Professional,BMW Online, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, one-off BMW ConnectedDrive activation.

The Gracenote database is stored in a 4GB partition in the iDrive's hard disk. And it is updatable by BMW Service using a Gracenote update CD from the Service Menu. The updated database would only work on subsequent rip.

So it is! I'm still waiting for my connected drive membership to come through, so can't actually update until it is active by the looks of it. The option isn't there yet, but the online manual in the car mentions it.

I at last have connected drive working and can confirm the update happens online and seems to work flawlessly. The Pro Nav is fantastic for music. The only thing that is missing is a way to play through all my albums sequentially. Don't understand why it doesn't do that!
