okay, i checked all of the fuses and none are blown. Im not sure how to check the relays out. All of the electrical accessories are working fine and the car turns over the same as ever. I've never noticed a fuel pump hum before starting this car, but there definitely isn't one now. what are some possible things I could have fried? The pin i shorted to ground is clearly numbered pin 7 on the diagnostic connector so how did I screw this up???

Have you done this procedure before without any problems?
Reason I ask is that some connectors have more pins than others so there is a different procedure depending on how many pins your diagnostic connector has.
If you tell me how many pins you have got, I can look up an old Tech Tip I found on the Interwebz and maybe help you out!

looked at it again with a guy with a 1991 325i sedan. someone please tell me the diagnostic connector is the big round one by the fuse box and not the one on the front of the motor! other wise i screwed up big! I put a jumper wire from the number 7 pin to ground on the connector at the firewall beside the fuse panel. Either way the car still cranks with no startup. We checked the coil and found that it's not getting any voltage to it. Now what?

uhoh sounds like you jumped the X20 plug, not the diagnositc plug. going through my wiring diagrams i used for my M52 swap, pin 7 on the X20 connecter is the link between the ECU and the ON position on the ignition, so it sounds like you fried one or other or both of those. did you use the plug that connects to the fusebox or the one that connects to the engine loom?

both. crap. no blown fuses so im guessing i completley fried something. any troubleshooting steps to track down which one i toasted? i remember when i grounded one side nothing happened, when i grounded the other to chassis ground it made a teensy tiny little spark. made a sound like my wallet getting very very thin.

you may have fried the ECU. do you have a buddy with the same car as you you could borrow thiers?? would say thats the most likely. The starter is independant of the ECU in our cars, so you can be cranking as much as you like.. if the ECU isnt getting power and or fried you wouldnt know based on that. when you turn the key to on, do all the lights on the dash come on?

all of my dash lights come on along with headlights, hazards, all turn signals, ac blower motor, everything. eta or i has me stumped. it's a 1990 325i convertible if that is what you mean. I'm not sure if I can swap my buddy's ecu into my car or not. From what I've read so far the ecu has a specific nomber and only certain number ecu's will work with certain model/vin # cars. Is that right? Either way his 325i is a sedan and a 1991 so his ecu probably wouldn't work. On a side note, does anyone know where I can track down a used ecu for this thing? I'd like to avoid getting sodomized by a stealership. Is a used ecu a bad idea? thanks for the help guys.

use his ECU. the ECU only controls the engine in these cars, and his car has an identical engine. the specific ECU for specific cars only comes in about 1994+

well my car is going to the shop this afternoon. I never got around to swapping ecus with my friend, partly because I know those are pretty touchy when it comes to static electricity and such I didn't want to try the swap in my driveway and wind up smoking his car too. Either way, I've got a local import mechanic that knows the car and the family, so hopefully i won't be out too much cash when this is all said and done. The stupid thing about this is I was going through the paperwork that my father in law gave me with the car and there were some VERY specific instructions on how to reset the inspection lights by grounding a certain pin in the OTHER plug under the hood. So basically I'm a douche. On a brighter note, my new shift knob and boot should be here soon and if I can track down a set of the original wheels maybe those too.

lesson to be learnt:

only try and cheap out if you can afford to end up paying more money than would have been needed to be spent in the first place

good advice! She ran like a champ for a week, then the fuel pump died. Picked up a new pump and put it in the next day and she's been running strong since. I'm pretty sure my in-laws let this car sit more than they should have. I'm guessing I'll probably run into a few more minor issues, but for now everything seems to be working right. When the snow melts and I've got a chance to wash her I'll get some pics up.
