The cooling system is a weak spot on these cars.... The best thing you could do is to replace the expansion tank, water pump, t-stat, and hoses as part of preventative maintenance. Or you could just go under your car and look to see where is it leaking from and just replace that

That's a good start.
Add to that the radiator, and expansion tank pressure cap, and fan clutch and fan. (you can also look up fan delete on www.understeer.com) The cooling system is an item that needs attention and replacement every 80-100k miles. The plastic parts get old and brittle, then crack, then fail. Overheating the engine is a really bad and expensive proposition. For probably less than $400 in parts you can replace the entire system, and is a pretty easy DIY if you have an mechanical aptitude. Google BMW E36 cooling system refresh.

Thanks a lot rrsperry ,I did check the expansion tank I found that there's a hairline crack along the side closest to the radiator and my thermostat hose flange connector has a corrosion building up between the cylinder head and flange connector.I'm replacing it this coming long weekend.
