BMW Confirms M5 (F10) will be powered by a Twin Turbo V8 pushing 580hp!

For anyone following along with BMW M groups recent release of the X5 and X6 M models powered by a similar twin turbo V8 this is not shocking. In a recent interview with Auto Bild BMW M GmbH's Managing Director Dr. Kay Segler confirmed what many had already guessed. For those that are disappointed that another M is going turbo should take some comfort that the reviews of the power in the X5/X6 M has been very positive and the M5 is getting a power bump! Look for around 580 horsepower from the tweaked and tuned mill going into BMW flag ship sports sedan.

BMW has been hard at work at the Nurburgring testing and refining the car so we can expect typical BMW M car handling. BMW has also been pushing hard with lightweight technologies so expect lots of aluminum parts to reduce weight and perhaps a carbon fiber roof option?

We're expecting the final M5 skin to be shown off at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, but we'll have plenty of spy pictures before then!

all these new turbo m's and turbo bimmers are going to be ridiculous.. they start out super fast already and all you really need to do is tune them a bit to get them crazy... we are going to start seeing the new m5s/m3s with ridiculous horsepower numbers with ease.

Who really needs all that horsepower anyway. On an ///M car I can understand, but in the rest of BMWs lineup, it's getting really ridiculous

It's too bad they have to remove the camouflage. We all know it makes the car go faster...

Already posted pictures of it - And these are legit pictures. You can see it says M5 on the display next to it, so this is it.

Who could possibly be against horsepower? Unless you only have 250 that is.

You can't even use that much HP on roads, legally anyway, so what is the point of having excessive horsepower like that? It seems unnecessary.

Those are not real photos from BMW. Those are photoshops by I think Gerald (alpine something) over on the other forum.

In the US most ///M cars don't go to the track, unless it's the 3rd owner and the car is 7+ yrs old. Most new ///M's drive people to work. Old ///M's get used properly. Having driven both an E39 and E60 M5 on track, they can do it, but there are much better track weapons out there. They do highway blasts and the occasional canyon run well, but 4 seat "sporty"& "techie" fun is their main thing....

Yep, there are still countries out there where $100 will get you far..

In the U.S., however, I think it's a safe call to say that driving 155mph on an Interstate might even bring you some time behind bars...

Cars this fast are useless for the majority of people, especially in the US where our speed limits are ridiculously slow. There's just no need for this much horsepower unless you really want it or are a big user at the track on the weekends. I just don't see spending so much for something that is so impractical.

Wausau is close to Road America. Try it, you might like; I did.
I think the five series is too big to keep the feel of driving that brought me to BMW.
The M5 won't dissapoint with the exception of the cost, depreciation and fuel demands.

The S6 is an option here in the US - but the RS6 would have been the REAL deal..

The S6 has has 435hp and the RS6 had 580hp. However, I think the RS6 has been discontinued.
