Buh-bye coolant

Our 2003 325xiT, with 7400 miles on it, has little or no coolant left. It's been very cold in DC until today, and both yesterday morning and this morning the coolant idiot light came on when starting the car. The light clears with a restart of the engine and doesn't come back on while driving. The temperature gauge hasn't risen above the middle mark.

I checked the level tonight and the float looks high and dry at the bottom of the expansion tank.

This seems highly unusual. My 2002 330i with 13,500 miles has required no coolant added.

Is this a known issue with this BMW model?

Fortunately, I happen to have some BMW coolant on hand (my former Volvo required adding coolant, so I bought some for the BMWs just in case).

Any ideas what might be going on? TIA.

I've had to add a bit of coolant on two occasions. The latest time was just recently when the temps got around -10F and below overnight. Just cold enough for the liquid to contract enough to get below the level at start up I guess. Same as you the light went out after the engine ran for a short time and never came back on. On both occasions I've topped it up with less than 1/8 of a gallon of 50/50 mix. The first time it happened was around 18 months ago and I had the dealer check for any leaks. They found nothing so I haven't worried about it.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply. I wondered if it were an extreme cold issue (although our version of extreme cold was around 7 degrees above). I will refill it and see what happens Thursday night, when the weather folks are predicting 3 above at night.

Funny thing: Our wagon is also Topaz. Could it be the famous Topaz curse!

I've been experiencing the same thing with my 2004 330CI. It has been extremely cold here and the coolant light comes on every time I start the car but then goes out shortly. I haven't checked the level, because I assumed it was the cold weather.

Well I had to add some coolant at around 19000 miles in my 330i. Maybe you have some seepage?

Nah, the cars don't mind warm temps like that. Mine goes through 2 months worth of sub-zero (lows) without any trouble. And there are people in Canada that endure much colder than that, and for a longer time period.

That reminds me, it's time to check the job listings in Florida

We don't see temps below 40 for the most part and I need to add a cup every 4-6mos.

I wonder if the AWD systems consume more? The system kicked in big time when we took the wagon up a very steep gravel driveway recently and we drove through a snow storm at Xmastime.... But that you'd think that would just burn through brakes.

You should not lose that much coolant regardless of the outside temp. Have the dealer check the water pump for seepage or for other leaks in the coolant system. Mine was replaced for that reason.

Yah. Does seem pretty fishy. Possibily the dealer didn't check the fluids before we bought the car. I think this car was on the lot for awhile.

At any rate, I'll refill the reservoir, watch the level, and have the dealer check it if it continues to disappear.

Thanks for the replies....

LOL! Last week, ever day we had a high of 3.2 F (-22 C) and a low of -14.8 F (-26 C). And with the windchill, it was -36.4 F (-38 C) at one point.

Yeah hey, what's the deal with this. We got -5 (-15.5C) the other day and I got the coolant warning. Checked it in the morning and it was ALL GONE!!! What the hell!!??!?! Is this a cold weather thing since it seems like a bunch of us are having strange coolant troubles during this cold weather spurt....hmmmmm....

Ummmm, tell me you guys are on the way to the dealer/service shop, right?

I mean it isn't like the stuff is vanishing, so its either leak or evap, but surely something to get checked out?

The expansion tank took about a pint's worth of coolant/distilled water, maybe a bit more. I'm just going to keep my eye on it.

I have to add on my '01 3.0 - around 100ml (btw 100ml is from MAX to MIN. on the floating thing) and that is on every 1.000-1.500 miles, did 2 pressure tests at 2 diff. dealers and no leaks in/out, the tech's are keep saying it's normal for this cars to consume some coolant ...... which to me it doesn't make sense cuz it is closed cooling sustem & maitenance free ___ just don't know where that coolant goes
For 5.000 miles so far it did consumed half quort of coolant ---- is that sound "OK" ? Does N 1 with '01 have the same "thing" ?

Kaz,
by cup how much do you mean and on how many miles around do you have to add ? THX

I have an 03 325iT with 6800 miles. The coolant light has been coming on for the last 10 days at startup and goes out after a couple of minutes. After reading this thread I checked the coolant level today and had to add 3 cups ( 24 ounces ). It has not been below 20 degrees here. Something is not right.

At 10000km the coolant was at minimum. I filled to the maximum 1/2 lt. Since then (now it is at 34000km) it must have consumed another 1/4 lt. It is not than much. A little water is leaking or is vaporised. An empty coolant tank though could be serious!

coolant light

Hey guys,

I just noticed that my coolant light has been lighting up as well the past several days. It only happens on the first start of the day. Weird... Anyone get an anwser on coolant seepage? Is it a serious problem?

Thans in advance.

Sounds like the water pump. IIRC a search should lead to some posts on pump replacement.
