alarm keeps going off

hi everyone! i currently own a 5 series E39. my alarm keeps going off every 5 minutes or so. i followed my friend's advice and opened and then closed all doors including the trunk and locked the doors using the wireless remote key. it didn't seem to solve the problem. can anyone give me any ideas on how to solve it? i'm getting really frustrated already. thanks!

Unplug the switch on the left cabin filter housing. If the alarm stops, you've found the problem. The switch may be bad, or it's not being fully stroked.

Ditto ^^^ As restated time & time again when this question is asked...check your hood alarm sensor. It may be the culprit from going bad or not being seated properly because the piece that secures it to the filter housing is cracked...or it could be that the insulation (in the hood above the tip) has worn away.

You'd think that the tip of the sensor should be pressed down by the exposed metal on the hood....but the tip misses the metal by a few inches and is actually pressed down by the insulation in the hood.

Unplug the sensor and see if the false alarm triggers stop:

Wow. Mine just started doing that, once in a while. I charged the battery the other day reading other post. But now I will check that switch. Thanx

My alarm goes off at any random time. I'm not really sure what's causing it but I've found a way to make it stop. Every time I lock my car I press the lock key again and the red LED on your mirror turns red for a couple of seconds. By doing that you disable the motion sensor in the car. Works at least for my e39 540i.

Have you checked any of the door latches attached to the car (not the door)?? Each one has a micro switch/tab that is activated when the door is open or closed thus telling the car if a door is open and allows interior lights to come off and on AND will activate the alarm.

I had random alarm problems on my old E36 coupe along with the drivers window moving up and down as if the door was being opened.

A new latch switch solved this and the E39 uses the same type of latch

see part number 6 here...
