Question Overall Range 550i vs 535i?

What sort of distances are you guys seeing on a single tank of gas, as in miles you can travel? I am asking about your real world experiences with mixed highway and city driving.

After lurking the F10 forums I'm leaning more towards purchasing a 550 at this point but I'm still gathering information on the practicality of a TTV8, or is that an oxymoron?

25mpg in mixed 50/50 city/highway use. I go about 350 on a tank before it reads to almost E. Then when I fill it up it only lets me fill in 14 gallons , which means there is another 4.5 gallons in there. For the amount of power on tap, quite an achievement. thing is very reasonable on gasoline.

Do you drive down hill both ways?

Im kidding but I have a 535i x and dont get that kind of mileage, even if I baby it. I dont have 1200 miles so Im not sure if that will increase over time. And I am doing a blend of highway and city leaning mroe towards highway.

Same here, 25 MPG with mixed city/hwy driving and 30.5 MPG on several 200 mile runs of 65-75 MPH driving between Greensboro and Asheville NC.

I averaged 21.7 MPG over 2417 miles on my ED in my 550i. I would say that was 80% highway 20% city but I took a big hit on the mpg on my drive on the almalfi coast. Wasted almost an entire tank on what couldn't have been more than 80 miles.

Base 535i, about 2400 miles on the odometer. I quickly started averaging a tad over 22mpg and I have a very bad commute with heavy traffic. I would say about 15 miles in bumper to bumper plus about 15 miles at highway speeds each way. I almost always see 22.3 on the display, sometimes up to 22.5 after some weekend highway driving.

I have 15,000 miles so far. 16-20 around town 25-29 highway. Depends if you are pushing it. Also, if you use sport setting this raises shift points thus the range.

I have the sport transmission. I set the sport setting for the chassis only and I use this mostly. The sport+ setting is chassis and transmission and I use this when I like to drive agressively. By always using either one of these transmission settings all the time I always get fast shifts and have a tighter suspension.

16.3 MPG and am still breaking 'er in, not exceeding 4500 RPM or 100mph. The 550 is a beast and coming from a 6cyl VW Passat, it drinks quite a bit more petrol but is an absolute blast to drive. I'm no speed demon but sure like to get up to speed quickly. Not much highway travel yet. For the record, the 550 is worth the expense but I'll guess the 535 and the diesel variants offer more than enough power while getting much better gas mileage.

My 550ix is averaging 16-17mpg 30% highway 70% LI local roads. Average speed 29-30mph (as per display) with 1200 miles- no beating on it. I wish there was another 2 gallons to the tank, I am filling up in the 230-50 mile range. I miss the 320 miles I used to get on a tank for my S550...

You and savela must either do a lot of city driving or have a lead foot. If it is the latter, I envy you! I am getting 20 mpg overall, with about 85% highway, and have some 2,700 miles on the odo. I'll start to push the car a little more at about 5K. Earlier if some upstart gets brave.

My average speed is 42, a reflection no doubt of my 85% highway. I also wish the tank would hold a couple extra gallons, as I find myself visiting gas stations more often than I care to do.

80% city driving. Quite a heavy foot although I'm no speed demon, if that makes sense. The acceleration is intoxicating.

26 mpg on 535i. Highway driving mostly, up and over a mountain range each way 38 miles, go between 55-75 mph on highway, average ~60 mph total trip as 4 miles each way are city slow driving. Hardly tap the brakes going downhill except when a slow car jumps in front (and use no more gas than needed) and use with paddle shifters to downshift/slow.

I'm doing better in the 535i with 8spd auto than in my 335i with 6MT. Likely because I drive stick more aggressive. With that said, I'm getting about 400 miles per full tank. The estimate is based off the estimated remaining miles plus miles driven at fill up. I usually fill up at a quarter tank, maybe a little less.

Just curious, why are you waiting until 5K miles to "push it"? I have about 2400 miles and lately I've been a bit more aggressive, had it up around 5500 rpm today passing a couple of slowpokes on the highway .

I have a 535xi and I think that she is a thirsty lady. If I am reading the information correctly on the center display screen, it looks like my F10 is getting 19.3 miles per gallon. But, I must admit that I am having fun with the DS mode and I am also having fun making the vehicle accelerate because I love that way it sounds in addition to the way it moves. In other words, the 19.3 miles per gallon might be more a result of my driving habits.

An overabundance of caution, I guess. Nothing rational. I am still paying attention to any noises the car might make (none so far), to the smoothness of the engine at idle (a little rough in my opinion, compared to other V8s I've owned, but it might be due to the HPFP) and while driving (silky). I am also still getting acquainted with the many technologies, gadgets and gizmos, including the feel of the different chasis settings, navigation etc.

Your post, however, is encouraging me to ramp it up a little... We'll see what the weekend brings!

It is definitely due to your driving style. From what I read in other posts from owners of the 535i, the mpg is outstanding, way higher than what I got from my previous 528i. Enjoy the driving! BMWs are built to be driven the way you drive.

Came back from a long trip and the temperature in our garage had dropped 20 degrees due to the cold spell last week. TPM alarms went off when I got into the car. Tire pressures had dropped below 30 psi in fronts, 33 in backs. Some of it due to cold. Inflated tires back up close to recommended pressures, but left it a few psi low as the cold temps are unseasonable.

Mileage shot up to 29 going to work . I thought it was erroneous, but drove home and mileage was 28.5 on the return trip. I also changed driving to Sport suspension mode, but with throttle sensitivity setting on normal. Doubt the suspension damping had anything to do with mileage, but I've never gotten this type of mileage before. Wondering if cooler temps/stiffer tires are helping mpg. If I really continue to get 28/29 in the coming days, then this is something worth studying further.

I've got a pretty good tire pressure gauge, and checked it with another to confirm cold inflation is not too high.
